I got a 24ft 8.5 Wide trailer. Great trailer, but given where the wheelwells are and the car's ride height I can't open the doors much. (They the wheel wells.) Still enouugh space to get the car in the trailer and walk around it. I would not want it any narrower.

Also at 24 feet long it gives me space to set-up an L shaped work bench for storing tool & spares. I can fully access the tools/spares/bench with the car in the trailer plus have room for standard bbq grill behind the car. Now 24ft is long, but I think well worth it. I am very happy I did not go for 20 feet.

I'd love a bigger trailer but my biggest limiting factor is my truck and I need to stay under or near it's limit fully loaded. I can't get a new truck for another 1 1/2 years b/c I took over someone's lease (did a lease takeover via swapalease.com). There are some great deals on there - at least until they stopped leasing trucks and SUVs as the residuals tanked at $4 gas!

Your signature shows you have the same truck I do, just a year older and no diesel/allison. It's a 3/4 Ton truck unless i'm missing something and even the gasser can tow a 24' enclosed. My 24' THule is tight getting in/out of the car, there is no way I could get out in that thing unless I keep my sunroof.

your truck is a 3/4 ton (not a 1/2 ton) and is rated at 12000 lbs towing. i have the same truck and a 20' enclosed (6500 lbs loaded). it feels like nothing is behind the truck while i'm towing

Why do you think you have the very low towing capacity? If your sig is correct, you appear to have a lot more capacity than you state. There are a bunch of folks trying to help you and you are ignoring their questions/comments.

Your sig says you have a 2500 HD. That truck will tow quite alot. So if that is your truck you can two almost anything.

If that is not your truck anymore change your sig since it is confusing. If you swapped trucks what is the newer 1/2 ton?

6600 lbs capacity is pretty much going to limit you to 2 things. 1 expensive aluminum enclosed... or open trailer. Most enclosed trailers come in at 7000lbs capacity or 10,000 capacity. This is trailer + gear. If you have 7000lbs rated trailer of steel construction expect the trailer alone to be 3000-3400lbs in just about anysize from 18 to 24 feet. Each trailer will vary and once you put a 2500lbs car in the trailer you can easily be really close to the 6600lbs weight. The consider a spare set of tires (200lbs) and few tools and parts and you are right at 6600 or over. Also consider if you have passenger it takes away from the 6600lb towing limit. So point is you will be very very close and little to no margin.

If you go open trailer weight goes down to 2k empty and that gives margin.

Now 16ft vs 18 ft vs 20ft is not critical if you real limit is weight. If you want to run a trailer with car and gear at 6000lbs then you need to look at weights very carefully. Shorter trailer are lighter, but not by that much. And longer trailer might allow you to better balance the load between the trailer wheels and the tongue. Clearly a 20 footer gives you more desire to cram stuff in.

Now you might be able to pull off 6000lbs with a 944 if you bring few spares and select the right trailer. Even so I would look at 8' wide minimum and also at 20 ft for the reason of load placement. Even then you may need to strip the trailer a bit. My trailer has inside wall covering. It makes it look nice, but if weight is priority one I bet I can strip that inside walls and just leaving the outter skin to save some weight.

What also is not being discussed in this thread is the Gross Rear Axle Weight Rating. With the tongue weight + all your gear you plan to put in the back, you might very well be exceeding the axle or even the gross combined vehicle weight ratings.

This is of course assuming you no longer have the 2500HD. You never answered that question...

Yes - Karl is right. I had to turn in my 2500HD as it came off least this summer. I wound up picking up a 1500 LT 2wd 5.3 v8 - actually took over a lease payment where original lessor put down their $6k trade to reduce the capital costs (monthly payment). It also gets 20+mpg on highway and is an extended cab versus my old 2500HD which was regular cab.

So my tow limit is 6,600...I fixed my signature.

Most of the 1/2 tons have a higher tow rating if you have a load levelling set up.

I am really supprised that is the tow limit. My Touareg is rated upto 7700 (not saying it is the best rig for that weight just supprosed the 1500 is so low)

it probably has 3.53 gear ratio (that's why it gets great gas mileage). the lower the ratio the lower the towing capacity.

i think the 1500 chassis is as stable as the 2500
