There are several books and a lot of papers of exhaust design. The theory dehind it is "relatively" simple. In practice though it can take a lot of work and iterations to get the ultimate numbers for one particular setup. If your current exhaust isn't optimized for your engine specs than it is very likely you could easily make some gains with a new exhaust.
