Default 944 Widebody Turbo Fuel Cell advice wanted

I have a leak in the stock plastic fuel tank on my 89 944 Widebody Turbo. I was thinking that this might be the opportunity to install a 15 or 22 Gallon fuel Cell.

I don't want to go through the hassle of installing a 12 gallon cell flush with the rear floor. I assume this would sit on top of the rear floor and would be around 9 inches high. I know this will raise the CG of the rear of the car.

Has anyone installed a 15 or 22 Gallon ATL or Fuel Safe Cell in a 944?

If so, I would appreciate any of the following:

Pictures of the install

Brand Preference

Experience with the Cell

Fuel starvation issues?

I have always prefered Aero Tech Laboratories (ATL), and you really should mount it lower in the body (especially if you are going with a 22 gallon tank) with an angle iron cage around it. The easiest way to mount is to remove the transaxle, and put it in from the bottom. (why 22 gallon? Is this an endurance racer?)

I have run a 3 hour enduro, with another car, but will run mostly sprint races less than an hour. I haven''t seen anything other than a 12 gallon cell installed under the floor and that was a major project. Are you talking about installing it partly through the floor?

The cell on my car is L shaped, it sits over the transmission and down on the right side of the car. Part of the floor is cut out and it sits higher than the floor. The car isn't here now or I could take some more pictures. BTW I don't know how old the bladder is, so I'm thinking of pulling it out and replacing the stock tank.

Kokeln used to offer a 27 gallon fuel cell...I'm not sure if they have it available now or now.

I'd be very interested if we could find a solution that was relatively affordable and larger capacity than the factory tank.

Thanks, the Kokeln cell was $2500, which is out of my price range. The 22 Gal stock fuel cell is around $600.

Kurt, is that a picture of the Cell installed or is it just sitting there?

Hey;

A search on the topic will reveal my advice numerous times; Fuhgehdabowdit. Get another stock tank and be done with it. That is the cheapest solution by far, and even that will scare you a bit. You will quickly and uncomfortably exceed $2k in work to get a cell installed in a reasonable fashion, let alone make it work right.

If anyone chooses to ignore that advice, I'll offer my follow up in advance;

I told you so....

John,

I did see your post and decided that the project as you installed, while neat, was beyond what I am up to. I probably will buy another stock tank and install it, but just wanted to see if anyone did an above the floor installation and how it worked out.

Hey;

If I had it to do over again, I'd probably do a through-the-floor install, as low as I could get it over the trans.

That's the cover over the cell.

I have done a fuel cell installation last winter, documented here

I started it for the same reasons you have: I had a leak in the tank, and, more important, a widebody 944T just pulls to many g's for the standard tank. Fuel it over 50L and it will spill; Fuel it under 20L and it will starve

I concur with Redlineman - the project burns a lot of money.

I got it to work really well, can fuel very quick, and I can use the fuel now really to the last drop, without starvation problems.

If the Kokeln cell can also do that, it would be the cheaper solution.

Absolutely.. the stock one is low and extremely light. Almost threw it through the ceiling when I went to pick it up after a year. Forgot how light it is. Love it. I do run it pretty low though. No starvation yet. I just jinxed myself didn't I? Maybe Im not turning hard enough!
