Default Helmet question

When does the new standard come out? Waiting for it to buy a new hat and just am not sure. Would like to get one of the new ultralight ones available but dont want to be outdated anytime soon. Thoughts/info are appreciated

Depends on the rating you are talking about. The new FIA standard is already out and there are a few helmets that meet that but I have only seen them available overseas.

The 2010 Snell rating has bounced around a few times on when it would be released.

The current statement from Snell is

· Certification Testing starts................................. Immediately

· SA/K2010 Labels Available.............................. April 1, 2010

· First SA/K2010 Helmets Available for Sale...... October 1, 2010

Joe, good info, thanks much!

So if I get the new FIA standard hat wonder if I will get rejected at an event because it doesnt have the 2010 sticker later on even though FIA is a higher standard than the SA 2010 will be? Can any Scrutineers comment?

FIA (BSI certification) have a date sticker, Year and month. Good for ten years after that date. More convenient than the Snell in that regard.

This matches what the people at the Stand 21 store told me (October).

One more thing on SNELL SA10 helmets - I wouldn't be surprised if some models aren't available until 2011. The SA05 spec allowed manufacturers to use the same size shell for small/medium helmets, large/XL helmets, etc. and add extra padding as needed for fit. The SA10 spec requires each size to have it's own size shell. I think this will really throw off the production especially with the economy for the manufacturers. Requires them to stock more shells in various sizes. Based on when the SA05 helmets came out, some manufacturers didn't have them available for 4-6 months after October (when Snell allows the newer rated helmets on the market). October 2010 is when the new models start to be phased in.

Joe or Apex, can you confirm this? Does PCA and SCCA see FIA as an equal or greater than cert than the Snell? I am in the same boat as Glen... waiting to get new, fancy, painted helmet for the 2010 designation. I was not aware of the FIA.

From SCCA 2009 GCR:

Crash helmets approved by the Snell Foundation with Snell
sticker 2000 or later Special Application (SA2000), or by the
SFI with a SFI Sticker 31.1a for open faced helmets and a SFI
sticker 31.2a for closed faced (if purchased prior to 12/31/04),
SFI 31.1 (if purchased after 1/1/05), British Standards Institute
BS6658-85 type A/FR, or by the FIA standard 8860-2004. The
back of each driver’s helmet shall be labeled with a minimum
of the driver’s name. The use of a head and neck support
system is highly recommended. Accident damaged helmets
should be sent by the driver or his or her representative to the
Snell Memorial Foundation, 3628 Madison Ave., North Highland,
CA. 95660 (ph) 916-331-5073 (attn. Edward B. Becker).
Details of the accident should be included. Freon based total
loss helmet cooling systems are not allowed.

Can't get the PCA rulebook to come up online - keeps freezing on me - will let you know...

I haven't been able to pull up the PCA rule today for some reason but if they don't allow FIA helmets I'd be surprised.

PCA has accepted the FIA standard for DE so I have no reason to expect they would differ for Club Racing.

I was looking for the new FIA 8860 rated helmet and found BELL was the only one advertising its availability and price, $4999.00 US.

Arai and Schuberth (Worn by Massa during his recent accident) are the others who allegedly manufacturer to this standard but I could not find this new helmet on their website, nor pricing.

You can find that Bell helmet for $3600, what a deal!

I believe this is the helmet Button, Tom Kristensen, and others wear. Looks very nice, but at that price I'll have to wait for the technology to trickle down to their other models

BSI standard helmets are available. I have a Stilo and like it for teaching since it has a built in headset.

With the way some of the major manufacturers have been going this year...lets hope they all make it through and have the funding to even make these helmets next year
