Default Tire Trailer Wiring

Need some help sourcing a trailer wiring kit for my 993. I did a search on this site and could not find what I was looking for. I have a 1996 993 and I am making a tire trailer from the Harbor Freight kit + extra side lights. Where is a good place to get the wiring kit and do you have PN's? I have searched on the Web and found numerous kits, with and without power converters. Any good suggestions? Thanks!

Any trailer store. Really. They have a chart with your car--even a porsche-- and you tell them or show them the connector on the trailer. Costs under $20. If I recall, my 993 was a "four wire" system and the trailer was three wires. Don't recall any power converter thingie.
Do a search. I recall a similar thread where someone posted links in the last month.

BTW, I have my old De'lan trailer hitch for a 993 in my basement, and I'm local to NJ. Should you need....

Power convertors save your computer in your car. Some cars are more sensitive than others to power fluctuations. They draw the signal from the car's tail lights and power directly from the battery.

Regular, unpowered, convertors convert the 3 wire system in the Porsche/import (separate signal and brake lights) to a 2 wire system used in trailers (integrated signal and brake lights).

A lot of new vehicles have t-connects available so you don't have to splice wires. Your 993 isn't one of those vehicles.

The unpowered version worked fine on my previous 993.

Thanks guys, seems easy enough to find a local hitch place.

Marc: Thanks regarding the hitch but my Willwood hitch is already on the way.

I wired my 986 for a trailer and it was an easy DIY.
I basically used the write-up found here: http://www.bombaydigital.com/boxster/projects/trailer/
The color codes may be a bit different but it shows the general idea.
I needed to buy a harness which took 5 wires from my Porsche to a 4 wire pin connector for the trailer. My trailer is a utility type.

Here's what you need: U-Haul wiring harness, product # 13486, link: http://store.uhaul.com/product_detail.aspx?id=120

I used it on my '95 993 and never had any problems. It is a 3 to 2 wire converter, but don't be confused by the description. The unit itself has 4 wires on the trailer side, 5 wires on the vehicle side. As stated above the "3 to 2" is referring to 3 wire system in the Porsche/import (separate signal and brake lights) to a 2 wire system used in trailers (integrated signal and brake lights).

Splice into the wiring on the driver's side taillight, and then place the unit in the engine bay by the motor mount. I just secured mine with zip ties/velcro wraps.

I've attached a few pics as well.

Buy me a drink at Roots and dinner at the Huntley Taverne and we'll call it even!

No problem, feel free to email me if you run into problems, but its pretty straightforward (stacy.freeman@comcast.net). I did the same thing with a Harbor Freight kit - it will work great. I went all over the SE with my trailer, even from Atlanta to VIR one time.

Now there is a man with good taste!!

Looking forward to traveling around myself (asking friends to carry my tires gets old pretty fast). I'm headed to Watkins in Aug., some local (NJ) tracks in Sept. and Oct. and then VIR in November.
