I have damn near 100 DE days, many of them private open track days, since my first intro to crack in Sept of '05. After my first run I called back to the office and convinced my buddy to buy a car.

More or less I jumped two feet in, but not in the traditional, go get your license and race way. In school I started out designing, building, and then competing through the fsae program. After the first year and as the average college Porsche owner bought a 944 and began tracking and autoxing it to get as much seat time as I could afford. After four more years, 100+ hrs testing fsae open-wheelers and abusing my 944, it was time to move on. Got my license in the spring and have two weekends under my belt. All that time in fsae was listed under "2-5 years racing" because the whole goal is to go 10/10s all the time with the only difference being passing being very limited and controlled. Needless to say, it taught me the speed, but not the racecraft. I understand it but am nowhere close to mastering it yet.

I did DE for 3 years before starting to instruct and race (about 75 track days). Since then, I have an additional 3 years (about 75 track days) of mostly racing with an occasional DE day as warm-up to a race weekend (to make a nice 3-day weekend).
Not to start the old DE vs racing wars, but I think I've learned much more about driving the car closer to the limit from racing that I ever would or could in PCA DE. Our PCA doesn't allow passing in turns (even for instructors) so I've learned much more about peaceful co-existence and cooperative passing from other DE groups and from racing.

"it takes about 10 years to run out of money doing DEs, and about 5 years to run out of money racing."
So far, Bull's right - I passed the "5 year racing" mark a little early - now working on the "10 year DE" limit <G>.

I've always had my priorities straight. Went to Fred Opert Racing School at Bridgehampton in 1971 (think Skip Barber might still have been racing!) Raced FF for a few years, DE since 1985 and PCA club raced 1994-2006. Been instructing since 1994
