Default 951 Motor - Not for the mechanically faint

My son's 951 DE car. We think that it has at least 200 track hours on the rod bearings, which should be replaced every 80 hours or so if you run anything but a stock chip. It took the 2 of us about 9 hours worth of knuckle-busting work just to get to this point.

Now all we have to do is put the bearings in, and put it all back together.

After years of refining gentle art of 911 engine drops to the point where I had it down to an easy two hours without breaking a sweat, my first 951 engine drop was an ugly experience.

Lets just say that there is basically no quick, clean or easy way to work on a 951 engine. Its never pretty, either.

Porsche **** backwards engineering is very evident in the 951 , a part to hold the part that hold the " part "

Now that it's fresh , Best to sell before you have to go in again .......

Wayne, that's in a 911. In a 951 the "part" is blocking the first part that you have to remove to take off the second part to get to that "part".

Some of those bolts are impossible, one flat at a time! Thinking especially of the turbo bolts.

That is the nice thing about an NA car. no plumbing to mess with when doing the bearings.

I did this last year - a real pain in the **** for someone with big hands - or even normal-size hands for that matter.

Now's a good time to do the oil cooler seals.

Larry, make sure you put in the Lindsey oil baffle kit. You want to do everything possible to protect that #2 rod bearing.

I need to do this soon too, but I'll be doing it on a stand, this is what my old 944Spec motor looks like:

From experience, I would recommend Lindsey Racing's three piece crossmember and two piece crossover. It really does save time getting into the bottom end. Now tha you have it apart this is a good time to do it.

That looks like a very nice piece! If I pull the pan on my car it seems like time well spent to make the switchover.
