Default Just a random thought on spec racing....

Okay, I may really be missing something here but I can't help but wonder.... if we have spec 944 racing, and now spec Boxster racing, why no spec 911 (SC or 3.2 Carrera) racing?

I've had some very cool and very fast Porsches, but almost nothing compares to the visceral experience of driving my '88 Carrera on the track. The only reason I don't track it more is because everybody else is out there in their newer and faster cars and, as much fun as I'm having, I end up watching my mirrors and trying to stay out of the way the whole time.

Is there nobody else out there that thinks it would be a blast to have a bunch of older 911s out there running together?

HSR klubsport has some great racing. I know a few years back they did add a 2.0L class where the engine either had to be stock or mostly stock.

Awesome! Any word on how that spec series is doing? Would love to see it take off as, IMHO, these cars are real driver's cars, allow for a reasonalbe budget, and true classics that are meant to be driven and enjoyed.

Thanks!

The series is very healthy. I am converting my car from PCA GT4 to PRC GTS (spec 911). The fields a good size and the racing is great.

GTC3 used to be 911 spec racing in PCA till the cars started getting rebuilt with cheater parts. Now GTC4 is a good spec until those cars start getting massaged.

That spec911.com looks interesting, my '73 could run there but is too stock so it would be mid pack.

Am I missing something? I would say PCA D/E/F Stock classes are closer to being a "spec" class than what I read on the 911 Spec page. The poster has a stock 88 Carerra he would like to track and he would be against 2400Lb (with driver) cars? And he thinks he gets passed a lot at DE's!

And just to clarify PCA has adopted the PRC Spec911 class as a valid class in PCA Club Racing (Just like the SP1,2,3 series).

It would be nice to run at a lighter weight than PCA but having to build an expensive 3.0 motor with a 964 intake to be competitive seems out of character with the "spec" theme of lowering costs. Running Toyos looks like the only thing that is cheaper.

No offense but aren't there enough spec classes already? If the point of a spec class is to be a driver's class what does it matter what car you drive. If you want to drive a certain car drive it in whatever's available. It seems like we're trying to create classes to be both a driver's class and a class where people who are devoted to a run a certain car. Otherwise aren't we going to dilute the talent in each class as people start to switch. I would drive spec golf cart if the fields were 50+ cars and all top talent.

true for D!

But E and F often have 300hp 944Turbos showing up so not a spec class

944 spec was created in 2002 because there was gap missing in Porsche racing experience.

There was not truly cheap Porsche racing class at the time. PCA stock still took alot of money to compete in. The 914 was considered as the base, but cheap unmolested 914's were getting scarce. However the supply of 944 NA's was getting to very significant. Also most of these cars were never turned into track cars so there were fewer times you would need to De-mod to race in semi-stock form.

So 944 spec took off due to the promise of close Porsche racing in car under 10k.

With the sucess of 944 spec brough the idea of doing that with a car that was a bit faster and more modern. So spec boxster was created in the POC right along side the 944 spec guys. In fact some of driving force behind the class were ex 944 spec guys. Anyway what sperates the boxster from the 944 is price, speed, and age. Boxsters are also getting cheap to buy used and are mostly stock. With 50 more hp than a 944 and more modern chassis they are faster and have 10-15 years less age on them.

Now why a spec 911 series? Will it be cheaper than a 944 series? If you are using 80's cars they are the same age as 944 series and the same speed as what the boxster series? Not really sure what market it will attract.

Look there are 3 basic Porsche spec series with natinonwide partcipation.
1) 944 spec - slowest and cheapest
2) boxster spec - faster, slightly more expensive, newer cars
3) GTC classes using old cup cars-- Fast and Expensive.

So if you want it cheap go 944. If you have bigger budget and want a little more speed go Boxster, if you have serious coin and want to drive ex-factory racers go GTC.

PCA has Spec 911... pretty much anything goes up through a 3.2 as long as you run 16" wheels in 7 and 8 inch with R888's

The rules for spec 911 are more specific than that. Please read them.
