Default My first NASCAR race @NHMS,....reluctantly...any advice

Hi Y'all,
I thought I'd throw in a y'all since I'm posting about NASCAR.
My brother in law is a big NASCAR fan. Go figure, he is a Chinese American who was born and raised in Michigan. Anyhow, for his birthday my wife and I are taking him to the NASCAR event at NHMS on 6/28.
Has anyone here gone to a NASCAR event at NHMS? I understand the traffic jams are legendary. Some people at my last DE told me to go really early while others said to go after the race starts to avoid traffic.
Is this going to be redneck central?
Should we not drive the Cayenne there????!!!!!
I have no idea what to expect. Who knows, maybe I'll think it's kind of cool driving around a circle.
So if someone says "show me your ****" to my wife, should she?
If someone says "show me your ****" to me, should I?
Any advice for survival is appreciated.

Just get a seat next to any of these people and do whatever they do, you'll be fine

My advice would be to go after the race is over.

Thanks!

I've actually thought about 'calling in sick' for the event but that would mean that my wife would be going without me.....and that makes me nervous!

Rent a scanner. It'll make the race much more enjoyable to watch. They're pretty cheap and give you everything including spare batteries. Normally you can rent one scanner but two headsets. I went with my kids and a bunch of PCA members to see a Busch race at Dover. Fans were very friendly but once the race started, there wasn't much talking because it's so loud. The scanner were cool because you just punched in a car's number in the keypad and it took you to their radio frequency. Also had the radio, track, emergency, etc. feeds. We had a good time at the Busch race. It was over in two hours. Not sure if we could've stayed for an entire Sprint cup race.

Interesting. I'll look into it.

I am with Manny, either rent a scanner or rent the Sprint vision device. It was fairly cheap and it really makes it fun to follow the race.

I suggest you approach the race like one should do at DE's. Check the ego at the door. This past spring I went to the Cup race at Martinsville and had a blast. Went with my gf and her parents, who have attended NASCAR, F1, CART, IMSA, ALMS, IRL, Rolex racing etc.. all up and down the east coast since the late 60's early 70's. It is a good show. It isn't all rednecks. Not everyone is drunk. It isn't just roundy roundy and try not to crash. With the new double file restart rule, the racing should be even better than what I saw at Martinsville. We parked our Toyota in the parking area (muddy grassy hills) next to Mercedes, BMWs, etc....

The noise is insane. If you don't have some kind of ear protection preapare to lose a lot of your current hearing.

I'll be at the Glen this year for the NASCAR weekend too.

There are lots of Dale Jr fans, almost everyone. That myth is true.

Since it's New Hampshire, you'll be fine.
Now, if Talladega was your first race and you wanted to wander down onto the infield, it would be time for an intervention.

That is reassuring....thank you!
Ear plugs,...check.

We'll be far from the infield at NHMS. We're seated fairly high up which are apparently the better seats because of the noise!
I may have to go to an ALMS race afterwards to detox.

If you like close racing & cool sounding engines, you will have a GREAT time. Ignore what these other assclowns say. There is a reason it is the most popular form of motorsport in the US. The racing is very close, the cars are much faster than they look on TV, and their sounds are intoxicating (but yes, bring hearing protection). ENJOY!

Study this carefully before you go and you'll have a better appreciation for exactly what is happening.
