How do I proceed to purchase in the group buy? Is it still available?
And it is for Traqmate, or G2X, or either?
And what is the consensus -- which is better?

as someone who just purchased data aq, don't focus on the hardware so much. Go use the software, most have free downloads of their software and you can find data almost everywhere. Spend time with the software, using it and see if its easy and you can understand it.
The racepak software was awful, not intuitive at all. AIM was easier to use, traqmate is like using the mac of data aq, very easy to pick up and go.
Also think about what people have around you, and the benefit of being able to share data. I chose the traqmate in the end, its super easy to use, easy to swap between cars, and the guy that coaches/works with me is very familiar with it.

I just purchased the Traqmate and the software is just so easy to use. I have numerous friends who have Traqmates so it will be easy to share data. Just my 2 cents.
