If you are just looking for a simple lap timer and not a data Acq system and you have an iphone, then there are a few applications for less than $20 that use GPS for lap timing. I plan to download a couple before Mid-Ohio this May and will post my results.

Do you mind having a trackside beacon or do you want something that runs off of GPS?

It depends on your budget and requirements.

I loved the AIM MyChron Light TG for a simple lap timer. I used it for a number of years w/o problem. You can download your lap times and keep it all for reference. Be sure to get the special cable with it. This unit requires a beacon be set out. But AiM is so common I rarely had to. The display is awesome.

In terms of getting into something that gathers data, are you willing to sit down and pour over the data and learn? It takes a time commitment. If so, try to make your judgement based on the ease of use of software as a key criteria. If the software is too hard to use or takes too much time, you are not getting much out of the system. Next evaluate how much data you need to collect, and if you need something that's a 'dash' that shows RPMS and such vs just lap times/predictive lap times, etc. The current generation of GPS gear is fantastic, no reason to use a beacon at this level. If you do make the commitment, you can really drop lap times. Just get a faster friend to drive your car and compare laps, you will know exactly where to make the changes. In terms of which unit, we selected to represent Traqmate based on ease of use and functionality. Check what your friends are running, there is value in having the same gear.

Hope this helps.

for simple laptimers, not data acquisition systems:

I like the AIM timer, the Ultralap is also nice, both require a beacon but there's usually one already set up at the tracks I drive. If you want one that works off the transponder timing system there is the AMB "Blind Apex" system, although I don't think it will work at practice days when the AMB timing system isn't being used..

The ones that run of the Transponder are the DisplayIt and TnetX. The AMB system has to be on and up to date at the track.

I have a DisplayIt sitting on the shelf from an old car. I think they retail at something like 3-350 but you can have this one for 175 shipped. It's just the box. The screws that come with it were custom for the car it was in so it will need some new ones to keep the box together.

I had the UltraLap and it always just worked, unlike some of my friends with a HotLap that were always didleing around with it. If you want to grab data and not mess with a beacon I would get the basic IQ3 as you can turn it into a great data system and interface TrackVision for video.. I'm about ready to sell my whole AIM system and buy one.
