Default Camber for racing/track use on 944.

I am almost done installing my front and rear coilovers. Soon I will be taking the car to the shop for alignment. What are decent camber values for the front and rear for a dedicated track/racing 944? Cup guys, what do you run on yours?

Thanks!

Racer's Edge recommended
-3.4/-2.4 camber front/rear
max symmetrical caster front
0/.01 toe in front/rear

Depends on the track and what tires you run. R888's seem to be better with less negative camber than RA-1's, but there are still some tracks where I'll want my front camber to be maxed out. I'll probably set my rear camber around -2.5 and leave it alone for most of the season, then tweak the front depending on the track. I like zero toe on all four tires, but you may want a little toe-in on the rear to help stability under braking, especially if you don't have upgraded rear bushings. Just remember that toe eats tires and scrubs off speed on the straights, so use it sparingly.

What eclou said - though I don't usually run more than 3.25 deg front camber. However, that's affected by how much spring you have up front, and I'm running plenty more than most, so with typical front spring rates, 3.5 or so would make sense... I'm actually up to nearly 3 in the rear as well, though - like 2.8 or so.

Bah....

You can't give specifics for this until you have specific information. It depends on EVERYTHING... absolutely EVERYTHING, and you won't know until you start to track some tire wear. Every car and driver is different. What you see in tire wear tells you what you need. If you can get a crew to help with pyrometer readings, so much the better, but wear is still the best (if not the quickest) guide.

Start at -2.5 front & -2.2 rear and factory toe (5/64 total toe in front/rear) and see how it goes. That is usually the area where most of the cars I set up END up.

Thanks for input guys! Just to add some info based on your comments: I will be running Bridgestone Ra-01R tires in 225/50/16, my front springs are 350# and my rear springs are 500# without t-bars. I wil be doing DEs this year and could go into racing next year.

That is a good baseline. I run my car very close to that. You should start there and adjust as needed. You may need more rear toe in if you have an open diff.

Good thread. I will be getting an alignment this summer and plan to find a good baseline to start from.

When the car is undergoing heavy braking the rear suspension tends to flex torward toe out. This makes it harder to keep the rear end stable when trail braking. One key feature of an LSD is the ablility to add rear stabiliy by locking up under braking. This allows you break deeper in a corner.

So by adding some static toe in for the rear you counter act some of natural toe out tendancey. Cars with good LSD can run a little less rear toe since the LSD will help add stabiliy. Open diff cars tend to need to run more static toe in to get sufficent stability to trail brake deep in a corner.

Now this has no impact on wheel spin on the way out, but you can play with spring rates, sway bars and camber settings to deal with that.

I have run with a open diff for 7 years and have always been working on how to set-up the car to minimize the weakness of the open diff while not fouling up the car every place else. So far it seems to work as I am very close to the top times in class where the drives run LSD's. My open diff car is only a few tenths off.
