R888 vrs PS2 as Rain Tires
I just got a set of R888 to use as DE tires for my Cayman. My street tires are PS2s. I have used the PS2s on a wet track and thought they were good. If I'm going to a DE and the forescast is rain, which should I run?

Bill, if the R888s are full tread, you probably will be better off with them.

I haven't had experience with R888s specifically, but I think most R-comps still offer more grip than street tires on a damp or drying track, but less grip on a truly wet track; certainly less through standing water. My own bias for iffy weekends is to have R-comps mounted and hope the track is mostly dry instead of mostly wet. I've wondered how effectively the tread pattern of R888s (something like that of 048s) might evacuate water.

for whats its worth.....my race shop runs the 25 hours of thunderhill with a bunch of miata's...the standard tire for "rain" was full tread R888's....& since it didn't rain this year there is a TON of them all over the shop! (yes they did win their class)

I used R888's in the wet last year and they were great. Mine were probably only about 3/32 tread left at that point too. At one point it started to rain harder so I switched back to my Pirelli street tires and promptly spun the 3rd lap out, put the R888's back on and never experienced any problems the remainder of the day.

I ran full tread R888's on my e36 track car last fall in the rain and they stuck to the pavement extermely well once I took some rebound out of the suspension. I do like full tread or 6/32 RA1's better for rain tires.
