another rotor option worth considering (if they are available for your car) is PFC direct drive rotors...

I've used the PFC pads and like them the best. Their rotors enjoy a good reputation as well and using parts that are made to go together seems a good idea. The pads do throw a lot of dust though, so a 2nd set for street is advisable.

333pg333 I've considered the PFC 97's but I just found out they only make the front pads not the rears for my 1991 964. 92-94 they make both, go fiqure... I will take your advise and the others who mentioned having two sets of pads. PFC has an excellent rep and I will also look into their rotors.

Interesting tip on PFC rotors. Long time user of their 97s ...but ignorant of their rotors. Talk to me: what advantage do they offer over OE rotors? And their cost comparison. TIA!

Pantera43,

You are right, PFC doesn't make the smaller rear pad for the early 964s, but the later model 964 rear brake calipers take the same pad as the fronts, so they cover both with a single pad. I recommend if you are doing any track time to upgrade to a set of used late model 964 calipers.

i really know very little about porsche oe rotors but the pfc direct drive rotors are two piece, true floating rotors with replaceable rings...pfc's quality control is top notch...

as far as pricing and availability for porsche applications, i have no clue...

97's - good pads but you should try some of their newer compounds (01's and 06's)...much better than the old stuff, imo

Thanks for the info, DM. Floating rotors sounds interesting, but have gotta be more pricey than OEMs, I would guess. I still have pad, but as soon as it's time for replacement, I will check out the new compounds. Thanks!

Checked with PFC for rotors. They don't make any for the 964. I decided just to go OEM rotors with Porterfield R4's. Just completed an engine drop and still recovering from the "while your in there" syndrome. The rear upgrade to 4 piston calipers will have to wait. I'll flush my system with Motul 600 and I should be good to go for my first DE.

OEM Porsche rotors are not cross drilled.The holes are actually incorporated as part of the forging process which is why they last longer then other after market rotors which are indeed drilled after the fact.

I change from street to track pads. I had uneven deposits with Pagid Yellows but did not have this issue with Perf Frict PF97's. I also felt when I put the PF97's back on for another track event they grabbed instanly where the Pagid Yellow felt like they needed to be bedded in again. I guess this is because the PF97's never require a bedding in and are ready to race.

Anyone with any info on thermal barries on the pads...Performance Friction vs. Pagid?

I do know that with my PF97's my red calipers turns that dark purplish marron quicker than from when I used Pagid Yellows. I never noticed my Motul600 fluid heating any faster between either of the pads I used.

Default Zimmerman Drilled Rotors

Zimmerman drilled rotor failure, Road Atlanta. Rotors were inspected prior running with NO cracks what-so-ever. Broke on the 2nd 20 minute run of the day without warning.

For the 964, I like solid rotors from Vertex. I think you will see longer life over any drilled option. I would also recommend upgrading to the later rear caliper and using the PFC 97 on all four corners (same pad F and R) for the track.
