It could also be his preference in driving style.
Maybe the PO liked to drift his car around the corners more or was able to rotate it easier with that combination.
Are you comfortable with that?

Lower rolling and aerodynamic resistance. Likely higher spring rate (stiffer/shorter sidewall). Lighter weight, particularly of the unsprung variety. He might have liked the balance and/or fell better. The rule of thumb is to use the narrowest tire you can get away with. Wide is just that. It does not necessarily = fast. Also, doing what everyone else does is only good if they really know anything.

Don't forget that you have to take the HP/Torque into account.
If you have too much area under the curve, you need those wider tires.
If you could post your dyno sheets, that would really help.

Why not try it with both set-ups and see which is best for your driving style. But don't forget Ronnie was one of the best club racers out there, and he really knows how to set up his cars.

with my driving skills (rookie) probably won't be able to tell much of a difference between the 2 setups, but at least I will eliminate the rubbing...... just a thought.....
