Default hans Device advise

I am just guessing we will have Christmas Money this year..... but I am sending my santas my list - it will have one item - a hans device

I see prices ranging from 600 to well over 1000

how do I determine the right one to buy.

I hate it when the most expensive gives you the only indication that that is the one to have

I don't understand the purpose of getting the lighter one. I know when I'm strapped in I'm being 'pulled 'down by the shoulder belts. I don't see how 1lb could possibly make a difference.

I say get the cheaper one.

I have a 'heavy' one, I don't mind the weight. I don't like the quick release tethers, do wish I had sliding tethers.

I've had the light one for a couple of seasons now. I wonder if there is any difference in the G-force limits the 2. That would be worth exploring before a purchase. I never looked into it bc I have the lightweight which is all that was available at the time.

By all means get the sliding teather, whatever you buy.

Yes and yes, assuming strength equivalency.

IMO get the cheap one. Sure one pound differance but your shoulder belts will push down on it with much more than one pound of force. Also, seems to me that the heavier one would resist the movement forward durring a crash better than a lighter one because of the mass resisting movement.

Sliding teathers. A must have. ONce in, I did not notice any real restriction in my head range of motion. The HANS was a non issue with these.

Spend your extra money on one more race entry.

Don't know if is's so much a mass issue as it is the material used in construction. I don't think the layup is the same or of the same materials. I think I heard that from a dealer but have verified nothing.

the two devices offer the same protection, they are made on the same line and to the same standards. I have worn both and can not feel the difference between the two when I wear them.

(have one for open cockpit and one for closed to allow for the difference in the seat position)

I have the Extra w/ the sliding teathers...the make all they difference in the world. With the sliding teathers by the 2nd lap you won't even know it is on. I don't see the weight as a factor unless you are an F1 driver or have $$ to burn. I only got the Extra because I bought it used in like new condition w/ some accessories for a good price. If I were going new I'd get the cheaper Sport model.

The the OP, please make sure that your seat/belt geometries are all HANS compliant.
