"Senna was 34, which means that, by F1 standards, he did not die young, just hard and a very long way from home. Senna transcended the tiresome debate about whether race drivers are really athletes because he was something far rarer in this world than an athlete — he was a genius.
Senna could take a 1,100-pound F1 car and transform it into a living, breathing thing; a throbbing dance partner in his dangerous pas de deux.
Niki Lauda said simply, ‘He was the best driver who ever lived.’"

"There are only three sports: bullfighting, motor racing and mountaineering; all the rest are merely games."
-Ernest Hemingway-

If you can make black marks on a straight from the time you turn out of a corner until the braking point of the next turn, then you have enough horsepower
- Mark Donohue

I drive way too fast to worry about cholestrol.
-anonymous

"For any successful driver, it’s confidence. Self-belief. But that’s in anything in life. If you’re confident in what you’re doing and you really believe in yourself that you can pull it off, then generally you will."
-Colin McRae

And lastly, since we're approaching this year's Spa F1 GP:

"You don't necessary need lot of downforce there, just large enough "attachments"..."
-David Hobbs (on Kimi Raikkonen through Eau Rouge)-

A google search will turn up evidence that this is most likely not attributable to Hemmingway. But it is a good quote

in 1955 - just four days before his death at the wheel of a sportscar.

"Jimmy ranked with, perhaps even out-ranked, Nuvolari, Fangio and Moss and I think we all thought that he was in a way invincible. To be killed in an
accident with a Formula 2 car is almost unacceptable"
- Bruce McLaren speaking of the great late-Jim Clark.

"Drivers are just interchangeable light bulbs - you plug them in and they do
the job"
- Teddy Mayer, McLaren.

"And that is Ralf Schumacher - son of Michael"
-Who else but Murray Walker, ITV commentator?

"I think I've proved that, in equal cars, if I want someone to stay behind
me... well, I think he stays behind..."
- Gilles Villeneuve.

"Break a leg"
- Grid Girl at 1999 British GP offering some 'advice' to Michael Schumacer

Substitute "racers" for pilots'...."There are old pilots and bold pilots, but there are no old bold pilots."

From an actual sign over the unrinal in the old Gasoline Alley at Indy......."There are two classes of drivers.....Those that have hit the wall, and those that are going to hit the wall".

"He's using my brakes to stop his car!" (believe that was attributed to Emmo Fittipaldi, referring to Andretti's overtaking technique)

I do not remember who said this, but I first heard it quoted at a drivers' meeting. While explaining the flags, a corner worker held up the "passing flag" and said "if I wave this flag at you it means that there is a race going on and you are not a part of it - get out of the way."

Hurley Heywood's immortal introductory words when riding right seat: " Don't try to impress me, because you can't. And don't try to scare me, because I already am."

You can quote me on this one, "DE is to racing as paintball is to armed combat'.
