WGI Koni race
Just picked up this press release about the WGI Koni race. Looks like the BGB guys represented the Porsche mark well. I would have loved to see this race on TV!
BGB AND PORSCHE RETURN TO VICTORY LANE AT WATKINS GLEN
(New York, NY- July 7, 2008) BGB Motorsports gambled on a one-stop pit strategy Saturday in Grand-Am KONI Challenge Series Grand Sport (GS) competition and it paid off, as David Murry outlasted Bill Auberlen by 0.307 seconds to take the team's second GS victory of the season at Watkins Glen International, round five on the circuit. Running near empty, Murry led the final 28 laps of the caution-plagued 55-lap race in the No. 38 BGB Motorsports Porsche 997 he shared with Tim Traver. It marked Traver's second victory of the season, as the Californian co-won the Fresh From Florida 200 in January at Daytona International Speedway. Traver pitted just after the 30-minute mark in the race, and the team spent several laps later in the contest debating on whether to pit. Team principal John Tecce said the only way the team would pit was if "the car was towed in," and Murry stayed out on the track for a duel with Auberlen.
Auberlen, in the No. 96 Turner Motorsport BMW M3, drove through the field after co-driver Matthew Alhadeff started 17th and moved up the charts. But he was unable to make a passing attempt on Murry, despite shadowing him under the checkered flag. The leaders ran their best laps on Lap 54, with Auberlen setting the race's fastest lap of 2:04.495 (98.316 mph).
Originally scheduled to be a 2.5 hour race that would cover nearly 250 miles, Saturday's race was plagued with caution periods, shortening the race distance by almost 80 miles. Many competitors running alternate race strategies never got an opportunity to mount their charge to the front and the #83 PerformanceDrink /Weeden Consultants Porsche 997 of Jon Miller and Craig Stanton was one of these cars. Executing a single stop strategy, the #83 Porsche was in a position to capitalize, as they were one of the first cars to complete their stop to be able to finish the race. Unfortunately their opportunity never came and the two would have to settle for a 13th place finishing position. The finish is not indicative by any means of the car's potential, as Jon Miller drove up to 3rd place before handing the car over to Craig Stanton. When action resumes at Barber Motorsports Park for the Porsche 250 in two weeks, you can bet that Jon Miller and Craig Stanton will be ready to deliver for Porsche yet again.
In their 2nd Koni Challenge race ever, Dan Gardner in the Scion tC were able to avoid a lot of the early race mayhem as Gardner worked his way up into the top 5 at the race's half way point. Gardner's good fortune would run out shortly thereafter as he was taken out by another competitor that managed to end the race for several other cars. The car had to be parked due to excessive damage that prohibited it from continuing.
Round 5 of the 2008 Koni Challenge Series is scheduled for Porsche's home track at Barber Motorsports Park. The race will be preceded by a qualifying session at 4:40pm on Friday July 18th with a 250 mile event that will start on Saturday July 19th at 2:15pm.
