Default Alternator putting out 13.4 volts. OK or marginal?

Hi all. I just got a new free battery from Sears
because the one I had failed within the warranty
period, but the failure cost me an event... The
guy said my alternator was only putting out 13.4
volts, not 13.8. Is this within range, or does it
indicate a failing alternator?
thanks,
Joe

What kinda car? My 944 puts out 13.5, and I have never had a problem with batteries.
