bobby varsha vs murray walker: F1
Is Bob Varsha the American Murray Walker? Well at least Murray had a certain charismatic flair to his bumblings. Varsha is just plain foolish:
"And here we have one of the Turkish dignitaries..."
Dude, he's the president of Turkey. Open a newspaper.
Sorry it's early....

I've wondered about something else that Varsha says at the start of every qualifying - "before you can race the GP of XYZ, you must first qualify". Technically not true for current F1 right ? You can skip qualifying and simply line up at the back for the start of the race?

Hang on a minute. The honorable Murray Walker has no peer. Lets just get that idea out of this discussion :-)
Bob Varsha may not be perfect, but the Speed team is extremely well balanced and each of them brings something to the coverage. Varsha was part of bringing Matchett and Hobbs to Speed, and should get credit for that as well.
The measure of the commentary team is whether they add to the experience of watching the race. For my money, Varsha, Hobbs, Matchett, and Windsor definitely meet that mark. I kinda enjoy Hobbsie's craziness, and I'm willing to forgive Varsha for the odd overly dramatic pronouncement and even for the the fact that he didn't recognize the Turkish president on sight [shameful though that may be].

I am convinced that Varsha, Matchett, and especially Hobbs are drunk for each broadcast on Irish coffees.
And I love it!

I have to agree with APKhaos, I think Varsha brings a lot to the team, which is well rounded and knowledgable. Further, I think Varsha has great wit. "Nothing like throwing your driver under the train," to Dennis after his comment on Hamilton's qaulifying. all good stuff, but it's also true that no one would ever be able to replace the inimitable Walker.

These guys don't have the amount of contact with Formula 1 personnel as Walker did/does, so they are at a disadvantage. And as charming as Walker is, he was not without error. That's part of the fun.
Let's not forget that they are getting up at 4 AM for many of these broadcasts...
The 107% rule no longer applies.
