Default Storage of brake rotors

The topic of storing spare brake rotors recently came up, and a heated discussion ensued. What say you?

I store it in a cryogenic state 3 degrees above absolute zero suspended in a feromagnetic field so that there is no deformation by the massive weight of these pads....

I don't have a clue how there stored in the bottom drawer of my trailer's tool chest. Never had a problem w/ 'em.

A point of view from a complete amateur: How can it make a difference how a 1-inch think piece of metal, which is only about a foot tall, is stored?? What's the theoretical concern?

I'm gonna guess that some people feel the need to protect them from corrosion (a need that evaporates when you put them on the car?), and so then the debate rages over contaminating the rotor surface with rust inhibitor.

Just a guess. I generally find that other things (and people) need to be protected from loose brake rotors. You can break a toe on those things!

You should never store rotors vertically. I mean, these things are heavy and all the weight at the top of the rotor is going to flat spot the bottom AND the top is going to sag to one side. I mean really, everyone should know this.

What's there to debate? I always protect my rotors from warping and flat spotting with the system pictured below. Griots and Snap-On has some in carbon fiber and alcantara if you're feeling large.

Many brands of rotors come in boxes that say "Store Flat"...as in "lying down". IMO, this probably reflects the influence of personal injury lawyers, as rotors stored flat are less likely to flop over and crush small children.

If the warning on the sides of boxes, akin to warnings on windshield sun-shades that say "Do Not Drive With Sun Shield in Place", are causing you and your friends great turmoil, I suggest drinking more...and better quality...alcohol.

I suggest that der Professor's suggestion be added to the poll. I'd vote for it!

Vertical storage of brake rotors, especially prior to proper heat cycling, has been found to be the number one cause of warped rotors. The ideal way to store them is suspended on a rod (grab one out of a closet), and remember to give them a good spin every time you walk past them.

As of this writing, apparently eleven people or 44% of the poll respondents believe that their rotors need to be stored flat.

Whenever I order rotors, I ask them to put a note on the box for UPS to have the rotors always stored horizontally on the truck

I store vertically with 1 facing north, 1 facing south, one facing east and facing west. This is to counteract any underlying magnetic forces present.
