Default Need advice on new rains

Are the new Toyo 888's better than the RA-1's for rains?

I'm finally going to break down and get a set and was wondering what you like.

For full out race rain tires....I am told that you cannot beat the Hoosier rains.

If your getting the rains for racing, Hoosier is the only answer in DOTs.

Try and get Hoosiers. If you can't, go to another shop and try and get Hoosiers. If that doesn't work, go back to the advice in the 1st sentence of this post. It will make racing in the rain fun again!!

I've used both RA1's and Hoosiers the difference is night and day. You can get by with RA1's, but not if you want to be at the front.

As Pat said, just get the Hoosiers. Here is a clip of a race at VIR. Car with camera is on Hoosier slicks (bad choice, but did not bring his rains), Red car is on what looks to be Toyos from my view in the pits, 911 is on an Old set of Hoosier rains (me). Temp is 37 and is raining lightly. I have run rain races with and without Hoosier rains. Without them you get passed silly fast be cars on them as they can run laps 10secs faster than you.

+1 for all who suggested Hoosier Rains. If you watch the Hoosier web site, they DO have current series rains for sale on their discontinued tire list. They ran this kind of special last year right around the first part of June and I picked up two sets of rains for $85/tire (normal rain tire prices are comparable to the R6). So for $680 total, I picked up two complete sets of Hoosier Rains for my car. OBTW, there was NO tax on these tires and FREE SHIPPING!. It really pays to watch the Hoosier discontinued tire site - https://www.hoosiertire.com/discontinuedtires.htm

No affiliation whatsoever, but I am a solid customer of Hoosier Tire for their R6's and Rains for my track car.

What happens to a Hoosier rain when it drys out?

My feeling is that the Toyo is a decient rain tire for most situations since it can be run fine in the dry. Most racing here is done in the dry and if it rains it usally does not say the same level of wet all through the race. I would think if you run the hoosier rains on dry track they will melt. Maybe not....?

Joe, Rain tires have a steadfast rule. If you bring them, it will not rain. Leave em at home and........
Hoosier rains will not last on a drying track, maybe a lap or two. Think about what Hamilton rear tire looked like went it fell apart last year at the end of the season.

Ok,
Then for me hoosier rains are useless. Sure I drive in the desert, but even the the worst rain days I have seen I don't believe it rain from start to finish in the session. Nearly all involved some level of dry or near dry track during the race. Sounds like deeper tread standard R-tires are the best for that.

For me I just ran RA-1's the entire time. Full thread for rain with standing water. Near slicks for the dry or when it there was not going to be standing water anyplace and 4/32 shaved or partially worn down tires for times it could rain or dry and you just were not sure. I expect to use the R888 simlar to the RA-1's except no shaving. BTW... rain tires are pretty easy to have if you run at least two sets of tires with one worn slick and the other with tread. I use the deeper tread tires for practice and the near slicks for race. Once the old once cycle out the deeper treads go into race mode I get use my 3rd set or get a new 2nd set.

like the others: Hoosiers. It needs to be WET or they will melt. If a dry line starts to develop you will need to stay out in the wet.
