Any helpful hints on renting race cars?
I am pondering the possibility of renting a race car for a few races either this year or beginning next year.
I really do not know what factors to consider in selecting someone to rent from, or what contract terms are adviseable. Any advice?
Also, what options should I consider if there are different ways to do things.
Do you recommend renting from a reputable shop or are their benefits to renting from/sharing cars with individuals. I have talked with Ernie J in the past and may reach out to him again.
Finally, what about insurance and liability issues?
I am tempted to try to rent an SP1 or SP2 944 only because that's what I know.
Any advice you have would be appreciated.

I know, I know, you said helpful. Actually that is not far from the truth. When you rent a car, besides the rental cost, you are taking responsibility for the mechanical condition of the car, without really knowing what it is. That is the thing that bothered me the most when I rented a car. If something breaks, whose fault is it really? It can come down to how defined an agreement you have. Things are usually more cut & dried with a shop that rents cars regularly than with an individual. They also can have damage insurance, though I do not know where they get it from. That being said, you will probably get a much better price from an individual.

Can film and data be used to assign liability?
In other words, if I go for a car that has data acquisition and video, presumably you could see whether I made a money shift.
If I made no money shift, then the fault for damage should not be mine.
I assume that repair costs for contact/wrecks falls on me regardless of fault . . .

TD,
if you are considering SP1 or SP2, just buy one. Would be different if you were talking about cup cars, where the entry price is much higher and rental is 15k per PCA CR weekend.
my 2 cents.

The problem is the gray areas where you have no coverage. Yes, with data and video, you can cover yourself a lot more, but say the trans packs it in. Who is to say that it was due, or it was your ham-fisted shifting?
There are plenty of drivers who rent cars all the time, and it is really a matter of how much $$ risk you want to take, and how comfortable you are with your agreement.

Todd, assume (as the car's owner will) that you are financially responsible for ANYTHING that happens to the car when you are in the seat: money shift, rear ended on grid, hit by lightning, tire klag damages a brake caliper, throttle cable breaks at WOT just before you enter Oak Tree...ANYTHING. Also assume that you will be asked to provide a substantial damage deposit and/or a valid race insurance policy.
