Default towing advice for newbie

OK, I have gone from building up a 996TT to be a fairly good track car, getting seat time in that car, a bunch of DE's, a couple of Skip Barber classes. I have come to realize what I want to do is race - in a more nimble car. This weekend I was fortunate to pick up a well sorted '93 RSA which has a history of doing well when driven well. Now my next problem is getting it to the track. I have a BMW X5 4.4 which I have used to tow other trailers, and it has done well. I would like to try to use this vehicle for towing the RSA if possible. Thoughts?
Given the vehicle I want to tow with, I assume trailer weight will be an issue. So i am thinking about an aluminum open tailer - Trailex, featherlite, ATC. I have friends with open and enclosed trailers. The enclosed appear to be more convenient and ?secure. Thoughts?

TIA

I tow an open Trailex behind a 3.0 X5 with a manual transmission. It is rated 6,000 lbs, the same as the 4.4. Trailer, race car, and tires on tire rack total just below 4,000 lbs. It tows fine but I wouldn't go much heavier. I hope this helps.

Enclosed w/car is too heavy for an X5.

Open Trailex is the lightest option for you.

If I remember correctly, X5s don't like having electronic brake controls installed (to modulate electric brakes). Go with a trailer with surge brakes.

Thanks guys, what I suspected - needed confirmation

Why don't X5's like electronic brakes?

Computer in the truck doesn't like them for some reason.

Shoot me an e-mail at work and I'll check whats what for you.

You can actually hook up a brake controller on the X5. Here are a couple of write ups on the subject:

http://www.bmwmotorsports.org/pdf/X5...stallation.pdf

Both of the above are a bit too overcomplicated in my opinion but you'll get the idea.

Having said that, my brother-in-law's Trailex has surge brakes and it stops as good as mine without any of the wiring.
