Default Early 2008 update: How are people liking the BFG R1's? Any complaints with them?

How are people liking these tires after fifteen heat cycles? I tried them at the Summit Point PCA race last year and thought they were about as quick as Hoosiers and had similar characteristics as the Indiana tire. However, some of my buddies complained of a lack of grip down at Sebring, having run very well at Summit with the very same tires (maybe five heat cycles on them) and are thinking of switching back to Hoosiers. They had these R1's stored in a garage that never dropped below 40 degrees

Any and all feedback is welcome. Thanks.

I have 9 heat cycles on my BFG's. I think they are about the same as the V710's. They still have plenty of rubber on them. No real complaints. The BFG are really light tires so you can lock them up easier. If they last longer than the V710's im sold, if not, I will be going back to the V710's because I know this tire better, and my car is set up for them. Also the V710's are cheaper.
I could only get about 15 or 16 heat cycles out of the V710's.

When was Summit last paved compared to the last time Sebring was paved? If the Sebring pavement is older and more worn it will have less grip with the same tires.

Plavan - Thanks for the info.

vbc - Summit was paved just after our race, but, prior to that, it had not been repaved in years, unless you count Home Depot asphalt-in-a-bucket. Some of my other friends had tired the R1's at VIR and had excellent results with them.

Come on; anyone else care to comment?

I wish I could contribue in more detail but I have only used mine for one four-day race weekend and one DE day. I've never used Hoosiers, only RA-1's and MPSC's.

I'm selling mine once I get them off the rims. Going back to MPSC's. I'm not fast, so why should I spend money on fast tires

Back from the dead. Still looking for feedback on the R1's. Again, some are saying that the R1's heat cycle out fairly quickly, while others say that they can go for 15 or more HC before pooping out.

Mark,
FWIW, I ran mine for the first time last month with Schatenbaum at SP. I had always run Hoosier before, but the word was the R-1's were suppose to be good, a little cheaper and better longevity.

Performance wise almost identical to the R-6's. As far as longevity, a racer in RTR ran them last year at a weekend event with 2 drivers, saying he failed to notice any drop in performance over that time frame.

Newbie question hopping in- what are you calling a heat cycle? Is it the obvious? A practice session, sprint race, day, weekend? Thanks

A heat cycle is simply one session where they are brought up to full operating temperature and then cooled down. Can be a DE run group, a practice session, a Sprint Race, etc.
