Default Camera System for a car?

What are you guys using for cameras/recording gear when you film your driving movies and track days?

I'd like to set something up which records from the front bumper or hood, and possibly from the rear bumper as well (maybe taped under the wing or something) and if possible one in cabin.

Something that won't break the bank and could be taken from one car to another with less than a complete clusterf**k of a job would be awsome.

I use a Chasecam system with 2 cameras.

Chasecam uses a single recorder but to run 2 cameras they have a separate processor that does the PIP and other things.

Any way to mount a Canon HV10 (small HD camcorder) in a Carrera 997S without a roll bar?

The Chasecam requires the SS1000 to use 2 cameras. The SS1000 allows you to configure the 2nd camera as a PIP (big or small, right or left, etc) or as a split screen. I usually use it as a PIP to show the view out the rear of the car.

Check out "The Cleat" I've got one & highly recommend it for mounting cameras to windows. I suction it to the rear window of my 997S. It has a pump to generate the suction, & lets you know with an indicator if it is losing grip.

Here is another suction cup option. I don't have any experience with it though. Sometimes I see some people with the suction cup mounts on the windshield but I personally don't like anything taking up any line-of-sight space on the windshield. In fact, I was at a DE in the Fall and was at the grid where the guy next to me had a suction cup windshield mounted camera. The instructor came up to the car (to do a solo check ride) and told him to remove it or he wasn't going to ride with him.

The other option is what mglobe does (mount on inside of rear window, facing forward).

The suction cup thing kind of scares me. My radar dector and gps fall off the window all the time. I can just see my $1400 HDTV Canon camcorder flying right out the window in bumpy turn 17 at Sebring.

Like Dr. Weber said, Chase Cam.

I've seen video from tons of systems, for the price, the quality, every feature, ChaseCam ChaseCam, ChaseCam, ChaseCam, ChaseCam, ChaseCam.

Ask Larry at TRG (707.935.3999) about it, he's a specialist on ChaseCams for the pro and track day cars, and can give you the equipment list, right down to what cables and clamps for connection and mounting.

Not all mechanical suction cups are created equal. I would suggest using something that the film industry uses and then be sure to tether it, regardless of the mount. Bogen/Avenger/Manfrotto and Century make most of the grip equipment for the film industry and should have something that is appropriate.

That is one and the same as "The Cleat". They are made by Woods

I've tried the smaller things with the levers (like what comes with portable GPS units), and they can't hold up to the forces on the track. The Woods units are a significant piece of kit. I was able to suction mine to our kitchen table, and lift the table off the floor. If you've got a bar/cage, then by all means mechanically mount to that. But if you don't, the Woods units mounted on a window can hold up nicely during DE sessions. You can and should check the suction level before each run, and if it's low, just pump up (or down) the suction.

Regarding mounting full mini handheld camera without a roll bar. Yup, 2 ways,

1. omit passenger and cargo strap camera to passenger seat back rest.

2. http://www.bkauto.com/porsche/r1029.php + http://www.bkauto.com/porsche/r9010.php

and longer 8mm bolts from what I recall. BK can mic both parts for you to determine any discrepancy for clamping. Or weld on a bolt to thread the camera onto.

They're very close, but they're not same, for the Cleat has a 4.5" diameter cup, while the Filmtools one has a 6" cup. The Gripper looks virtually identical to the Filmtools one and has a better platform for cameras than the Cleat.
