New Helmet Design
Just wanted to share some pictures of my kids new helmet design. I asked my friend Dirk, a mechanical engineer by trade and fantastic artist with the airbrush by evening, to put some color on our big egg shell helmet.
To the horror of A. Wayne, inspiration was derived from some of Michael Schumacher's Ferrari helmets. We tried to incorporate that along with our Italian/American heritage to come up with something for the start of her 7th year in karting. Hope you like the images

Good luck Isabella, keep daddy away from your Kart if you want to win ...

I don't know where to start, but the plain white was all sanded down, then the helmet was worked on section by section starting at the top. We used a lot of metalic paints and blended the blue and yellow to come up with the green. On the outer edges of the green he used more blue for effect.
On the red, the base was a flat red, then tape was put over the dried red and a metalic gold lightly sprayed on and later the tape was taken off for that effect.
The top is probably the highlight of the helmet, but I didn't see how he did it. I image it was sectioned off grid by grid with tape and then painted in with the gold faded back with the stars taped off.
Finally the white in the middle of the helmet was added back because the base white that the helmet came with was all sanded down.
He did a heck of a job. His wife had always told me about some of his artwork and then showed me a 911 he airbrushed and it literally looked like a picture. This is the first time he's ever painted a helmet.

The paint scheme was the same as his K2005, Ferrari/Kimi inspired, but the artist (Brad at Bullseye Visual) did make a few small subtle changes to make it look a bit 'faster'........oh, and he also put 'Flipper' on the back of the helmet (the team nicknamed him 'Flipper' after his roll/flip accident)......I wonder what someone behind him must be thinking when they see it.
We were fortunate enough to find the last known Caracoat Iridium Red visor in the US, looks fantastic in the pictures of him driving....too bad Caracoat went out of business.
