from the LSD, i assume you got a'99...nice. cable throttle and no psm/egas to screw things up.

you'll love it but first thing is to ditch the oem suspension and get some gt3 sways. that's the beauty of this car, you can use gt3/cup car parts

drive it hard but no high banked ovals for you

Yeah, '99. Already talked with Karl at Racer's Edge and Austin at TRG about suspension bits. They'll be a changin' soon. I'm gonna do the BK bottom pan and 3rd radiator upgrades first. What's the dig on the high banked ovals?

Bill,
You'll love the 996. Drop me a line if there is anything I can do to help.

don't do the BK pan spacer. it does increase the volume of the oil pan but the oil pick up is not lowered....it remains in the same location. do the x51 pan instead. it creates a larger baffled "reservoir" in that its walls go all the way to the oils sump block whereas the oem baffle is a smaller plastic insert.

vs.

regarding ovals... the oil scavenging design of the cams sometimes causes pooling of oil. in high G sustained turns, i.e. ovals, the oil can collect in the cam area. this can potentially cause oil starvation to the rest of the engine because the oil is not being returned to the sump. there is/was an oil scavenging kit from porsche that tapped into the right side cam cover and returned the oil to the sump. i'm not sure if it's still available.

Good advise on the bottom pan. The oil scavenging kit is NLA from Porsche. Been told that the appropriate updates have been made to the new motors so that this is no longer needed.

Jim, fill me in on the 3rd radiator. Needed? Also, I'm going to need some alignment advise. If you withold valuable information I'll sick Ghetto Racer on you via night time telemarketing.

Any idea how much $$ you'll need to drop into it for full race suspension?

The third radiator is a very easy DIY and not too expensive. You'll want it if you run in hot weather. With it the car runs very cool.

Alignment depends completely on suspension and how much you plan to drive it on the street.

Since I don't race my 996 anymore I'm more than happy to spill my guts.

Not as much as you think. I should be able to come in below my original budget of $45K easily including a custom roll cage, Motons, bushings, seats, harnesses and everything.

Full on track set up should be in the neighborhood of $8,500 for all suspension parts including double adjustable remote resevoir set up.

Did you run an oil cooler?

i run an oil cooler now. much bigger temp difference than the 3rd radiator, IMO. since the oil is cooled by the coolant/oil heat exchanger, all the exchanger does is add heat to the water. the auxiliary oil cooler dumps it's heat off to the atmosphere. i still have the 3rd coolant radiator.

i had the plumbing left over from my supercharger so i decided to install an oil cooler instead of removing the plumbing. in 90+ temps the temp needle was just passed the 0 of 180 degrees and was rock solid.

Wow, that's looking like a pretty good deal.
