Default 996 Cup Lap times for VIR and Watkins Glen

What are the fast lap times at VIR and Watkins Glen in a 996 Cup?
rsrracer had said (in a thread on 6Speedonline) that at VIR sub 1:58 and at W.Glen sub 1:59.

But is that for club guys or Pros?

I know the guys I have seen at DE's are not THAT fast. I think 2:01-2:02 for a 996 Cup is the fastest I have seen/heard. I am sure the guys who race are slightly faster than the DE only guys.
I ask because I have to try and attain it!! I can't help myself. Of course I will work up to it, but now I want to do 1:58's or better at VIR. Before I heard 1:58 was the fast time I was shooting for 2:00 flat. So now I will try for a 2:02 the first time I have my Cup at VIR and then go down from there - I hope.
If I can do a 1:58 in a 2000 Cup, I will be ecstatic! That is as long as I can drive the car on the trailer at the end of the day

For club racing the fastest times for WG are on the PCA results page:

GTC3 1:56.947 Leh Keen 04 996 Qualifying 6/4/2005
GTC3 1:56.969 Wolf Henzler / Leh Keen 04 996 Practice/Warmup 6/5/2005
GTC3 1:57.537 Leh Keen 04 996 Race 6/4/2005

those are from '05, and I imagine that year's spec car.

Achieving them in an '00 car may be tough

The grid and results sheets in PCA racing don't distinguish between pro and pure amateur.

You go out and race against whoever else shows.

How do you want to judge your performance?

Point taken.
But I am not racing - just DE's right now.
Some much to learn....yet I want it now!
One day I will be able to judge my performance against Leh and Wolf. Actually I can do that now - I suck and they are awesome
Anyway, I have a lot of work to do to get my times where I want them.
Will report back when I am not ashamed of my slow times

Matt

An interesting exercise for you then is to go to the results pages for PCA Club races and see how your times would compare to various drivers, in your case the ones in GTC3, and where your best time would put you on the qualifying grid

VIR

Matt, there have been many events where I was timing the "DE" cups and they were in the 201-202 range when they had open track and 205 range when they had to deal with traffic. When I watched qualifying (Rolex/GrandAm) at VIR the qualifying times were breaking 150 but the race laps were in the mid to high 150's. Those guys were seriously moving!

The street GT3's times are all over the place because of the huge disparity of suspension work, tires, skill, etc. I have seen everything from 2:05 to 2:20 in street going GT3's.

I recently bought a Traqmate system but NOT for the purpose of tracking lap time but to break down sector times. I try different lines, braking zones, etc., and then crunch the data when I get home to see what I am doing well and what needs work. I think this approach will get me the best lap times in the future....those that I am not trying anymore and just "driving".

Go to mylaps.com and search for results from the years. Here's a link to this year's first sprint race at Watkins Glen. Look at class GTC3. I'm assuming your car is stock.

GT3 Nut:

My best time at the Glen was in 2006. I did a 1:58.7 something in my 2000 cup car. Lots of 1:59s. I sold that car a few months ago. The car had 2004 gears, 2004 shocks, but the old brakes. I never had the car dynoed by the guy who bought the car uses Autometrics and it dynoed at low 340s at the rear wheels. IN fact I posted a comparison of me versus Cory and Bransen Patch just after the 06 club race if you can find that in archive.

I have not had my cup car at VIR but I am certain several club racers could get to the time I mentioned.

I am far from pro level!

I would love to meet up with you at VIR or maybe the Glen at a DE. You could do some laps in my car so I would have the data to compare with mine.
I hear you are one of the fast club guys - close to pro.

RSR is very fast, I've seen him in action at the glen before.

Matt: I do remember you, you have a paint contracting company? I think your yellow GT3 had like 250 miles on it when we had it on track....

Anyhow, I would love to meet up with you guys. Looks like the Potomac DE is the weekend after the Road America club race and the weekend before the Utah Grand Am race so I should be able to make it.

I will try to sign up as an instructor. I currently don't have a Porsche (first time in a while!) maybe they will let me take my E63 out for a few laps?

As far as being close to pro, well I guess that's like being close to pregnant. I am one of the faster club guys but not as fast as any of the guys who get paid to drive - Lally, Andrew Davis, Pobst, Henzler, Werner - would all be faster and consistently faster. While I may be able to struggle to keep up for a few laps in the end they would be about 1 - 1.5% faster, which is huge in a race as this is 1,5 seconds per lap at VIR.

RSR, Your Glen times are really good. One of our group was running 2:01s in a 2000 cup (not his) and he used to race GAC pretty competitive. I think the car was a straight Cup no mods, temps were pretty hot out so give him a second or so for lost power. That puts you in the pro field.

RSR
Even if you could come for one day - that would be great.
I am instructing at that event, but if you could do a few laps in my cup car so I have some data to work with, that would be very helpful. I will put the passenger seat in the cup if you want to ride as well.
I will also probably bring my 997 RS to take out for a few laps as well.
As far as my yellow GT3 - you are probably right about it having about 250 miles on it. The first time I had it on track it had under 70 miles on it. Nothing like a proper break in

Yes I do have a paint contracting company.

Are you doing both of these races?
What are you driving at the club race?
What team in Grand Am?
