And don't even think about a LOWERED 944/951. Ball joint failures can be REAL problematic. Don't ask me how I know.

What kinda budget are you talking? (Purchase price and est. yearly maintenance?)

If you get aftermarket A-arms/ball joints, you will be fine lowering a 944/951. I have the Kokeln A-arms and they work very, very well.

IIRC, you can still get Blizzak and Charlie arm upgrades as well.

The 944 isn't a bad place to start -- very forgiving car, and if you keep up with the maintenance, it's not too costly to track. And if you shunt it into a corner, it's not as big a loss to your wallet...

Then again, I'm biased.

Well ... I wish that were correct. My experience says otherwise. Big-time. I MIGHT agree with you if you changed out the ball joints after each weekend. But even then, I'm not getting in the car.

What setup did you have when they failed?

That is because they are often pushing the limits on HP. Upgrade turbos and boost to get 300+ RWHP and more stuff will break the same way a 300+whp 911 will break stuff. The other problem is a 300 whp 951 is just about 1000-1500 away (You can get 300+whp 951 street cars for 12k all day long, see the trend here). However it takes alot more money to run that level of power on track reliablity. Most 300+ whp 911's take alot more $$$ to get to that power level and so most will also have alot of the other upgrades included.

When you get to about 400 whp in 951 you are reaching the limits of even the most well developed chassis.

What clubs? Every PCA region around here does. You just need a Brey Krause roll bar extension. There are a bunch of people club racing them too.

I belive trackmasters does not allow convertibles in the mid - upper run groups and some other (PCA and BMW) clubs as well. One of our local PCA memebers sold their boxster and bought a Caymen becasue of this.
This is based on what I have 'heard'....so take it with a grain of salt.

+1 for boxster-s they are wonderful cars great balance OK power and fantastic in the twisties. Streach your left arm prior to event so you can point-by's on the straights

Where did this ugly rumor come from? I have instructed in a few Boxsters, chased others, and have yet to hear of them being banned.
Maybe there are some augmented safety rules about rollover protection, but banning? Not that I have ever heard.
