Is this BMW PTG race car overpriced???

If someone pays $300K for that, I have some other crap I'd like to unload on a special kind of sucker.

Der Professor's "Lone Moron Theory": All it takes is one buyer who thinks it's worth it.
They're trolling for that guy. They'll find him, too. Race car world is full of them.

Regardless of what it sells for (whether its worth it ot not) that is one very cool race car! I'll bet its an absoloute thrill ride! Wish it was worth 225K to me, but its not. I'll stick with my 996 Cup.
Good luck to whoever gets that car!

I was able to see the car run @ VIR with BMWCCA, and it was beyond words. You could hear it in the paddock from practically anywhere on the track, and it hauled butt. I was actually amazed that someone was still running one in competition considering how rare they were.

I ran a test day at Summit with PTG. They had Auberlein's and Joey Hand's 21/22 cars there testing slicks. It was really hot and we were pushing to break 1:25s in the heat. The GTR's were lapping at 1:09s and that was with the 6 cyl engines in them. Cars were awesome. PTG was fun to run with and great group of guys. According to the team owner 21/22 had 8's in them at one time.

Yea, even on a customer car with a 2.9L the E46 motorsport chassis was in the mid teens within a couple laps (pro driver of course).
BMWCCA Cmod runs 18-19's with 300-360whp @ 2400-2500lbs wet.

It was rumored these cars cost over $500k to build. The level of sophistication in the traction control was formula one technology. I saw one at Willow Springs and the driver only had to floor the accelerator pedal in the corners and steer, the computer was able to apply the maximum power based on grip for any corner. The driver could dial in more or less intervention.
Is it worth it? It's about the fastest door slammer BMW's ever built. What do factory built porsche racecars go for? For the well healed BMW enthuisast this is there 934. This car is easily a 200k value.

I think it was just Motec Traction Control (maybe Bosch?), nothing too F1 about it, but it does work well when setup properly. Takes a lot of setup time and dialing in. F1 might not even have TC much longer, or anything good for that matter lol
GTR's were actually Kit cars, just like the Z4M. They come in boxes essentially, and are all customer based. The GTR chassis was different from the standard MS chassis mostly in respect to the fact that everything was lower. On some of the GTR's there was a tube frame rear suspension and mounting of the differential...they evolved over time.
$125k can get you a pretty well used ALMS GTR right now as I mentioned before, however it does not come with the amount of spares the above mentioned GTR chassis does...however this #001 chassis has had a lot of use/abuse, and is old, but thats also something that can add to its historic value, definitely a showroom peice for someone, but for me it would be on the track racing every weekend.
At the time, $500k new for everything is about right with some spares. The motor and electronics (remember originally GTR's meant 4L v8) are $100k, chassis is another ~$25k, then suspension $25k-50k, Wheels/Brakes $20k, misc aero $20k, driveline/transmission/rearend $100k, etc etc etc When you build something new with best of the best, it all adds up QUICK.
I'm building an E46 right now, similar to the GTR, but using a 2.8L turbo instead www.jaffster.com I'm doing a similar tube frame rear end to the most recent GTR, 280's all around under stock body work, and some trick aero I just finished designing. Because of rules, I can do some stuff the GTR in ALMS was not allowed to, but mostly its just to go to the extent of BMWCCA rules, its got so much potential, it'll take me some time to take advantage of it all. Some of the stuff I'm designing for it that were sometimes not implemented because of rules are things like cockpit adj swaybars. I'm also doing some design work on side impact structures, and got some sponsorship/help from DOW, so I'll be using the new Impaxx foam ( as seen in nascar) in a side impact drivers side "pod."

'Just Motec traction control' - the devil is in the algorithms - its quite possible to create a TC system that is aware of each corner on each track (no not all at once, Virginia). BMW has access to some very sophisticated LSD technology from GKN's Italian research facility and the possibilities are endless.
For me, the limitation that this car has is its high cost of operation and maintenance and lack of top grade competitions in which to enter the car.

Judging by most of their current horrid styling, I would have to agree.

If you're going to spend that kind of money on a used race car (and that's all it is...a USED race car), it should damn well involve the words "McLaren" or "Lola", have a nasty big-block Chevy in the back and not have a windshield or roof.
