Don't put a car on the track if you are not ready to walk away from it. I did exactly what you just posted, went out and bought a 1988 924S for track use and kept the 2003 M3 for the street.

Feel free to PM me if you have any questions about the Potomac DE program. I have been active with them for some time.

BTW there is not such thing as a cheap Porsche track car. You might purchase a car for less $ but you wil end up putting it in one way or another.

Most race tracks are better designed to contain the car even it is a wall.
ORR is definitely dangerous. You must be aware of the risks to yourself as well as your vehicle. A tumble through the desert is generally not going to end well. There have been accidents, just as there are track accidents, even in DE. ORR affords us the opportunity to drive on US Highways at Autobahn speeds, knowing there are no police or oncoming traffic to worry about. The cost is a bit more than DE, so one can schedule 2-3 DE's for the price of 1 ORR entry fee. I try to budget for both.

Yes and no. At an ORR, once up to speed you wont shift again, and generally won't brake much (if at all) until you cross the finish line. Some cars run at or near redline for much of the event, but generally only the upper speed classes. My 928-S4 has a 2.20 final drive ratio, so cruising at 160mph isn't anywhere near redline. George's car has a slightly higher final drive, and we would run near redline at 185+mph. Now, how many times will you shift and run up to redline, use full brakes, and toss into a corner during a track day? I figure more wear and tear at a track day.

But it's all fun, ORR and track, and that's what it's all about!!!!

928's were made for ORR...plain and simple.....however they aren't too shabby on the track either....Rich & I go to a few DE's a year.....and a stock 928 does just fine on the track...keeps up with modern sports cars 20 years newer.....sometimes passes them!

I haven't done an ORR yet...but will someday in the future....it all comes down to time and $$$ The nevada ORR that most of the CA crew goes too is quite far, even for us at 500+ miles...vs several tracks within 150 miles....

I say try a DE to get a taste of what driving the 928 near its limit feels like.....& learn ALOT about driving.....then maybe try an ORR in the future.....at most nevada ORR's there are 4+ 928's out of a fairly small field! That tells ya something....

http://www.silverstateclassic.com/results-07-norc.htm

Take a look at the winner of 160mph....thats an 88 S4 5 speed....with a "slightly" modified engine that makes "only" 600hp or so.....the only car out of 118 to hit 200mph....2nd was a distant 187mph

Default Hey Rich

The next time you hit 100+mph on the track for a few seconds, imagine never slowing down below 135mph for 100 miles. That's what George and I did last weekend, our top speed was 189mph.....
Oh my 189? Tech speed was what? Or did you tech up?

It was fun.

BTW, 170+ average is a blast. My best was 187,xx...how the time flies when we are having fun.

Cheers

Were you able to drive the course prior to the run or did you go at it blind?

Hey Roland, good to see you here! George teched up to 200+mph. The engine is a goner, will need a totally new one. Don't know yet if he can make it in time for Gamblers Run.

Check out the thread in the 928 forum for all the details and the in-car video.
