Forgive a newbie here. Is "Michelin Pilot Sport Cup DOT Legal" tecnically a R-Compound tire or not. I noticed that tirerack for some reason does not even have a notion of r-compound in product descriptions.

Is R-compound a tire with certain UTQG properties? What kind of requirements does a tire have to meet to be rules as R-compound.

Yes PSC's are R-compound DOT legal tires.

You must not have actually seen their description of the MPSC here:

"Developed for drivers who participate in autocross and track events, the Michelin Pilot Sport Cup is a DOT legal street competition radial ..."

In Tire Rack if you look for "Track and Competition DOT" you will find the R-comps

by the way, R-compound typically refers to treadwear ratings <100. But that's not a universal rule, and treadwear ratings aren't always perfectly accurate. But anyway, a 150 rated tire won't be R, but an 80 will be.
