I am a big believer in shuffle steering as it allows me to quickly reposition my hands, never get them crossed, and have fluid movements of the wheel. I never purposely tried to drive that way, it just sort of developed. And I don't purposely let the wheel slide between my hands either, unless it is because I can't turn it any quicker, and that is only when I am trying to save the car and need to immediately remove a counter-steer input. It is a last ditch trick, not an normal driving tool. And I don't think that I close my eyes.

I despise the term "shuffle steering" because some people use that to describe "busy hands."

It seems to me that proper "shuffle steering" would involve the deliberate repositioning of the hands. I do that, but apparently other people reposition much early than I do.

I do. I still hold by my statement.

I don't don't think Han Stück ever slides the wheel through his hands on that great video of him at The Ring.

As for myself, I almost never even shuffle steer, although sometimes it makes some sense. Perhaps it's my technique or perhaps it's just been ingrained in me over the years.

In the end, if I'm going to try to emulate someone on the track it's likely to be someone who is making their living racing cars.

As for quicker steering racks, I would guess most production based cars use a stock rack.

Actually, if you watch very closely, he does in the very slow, tight stuff. Watch the speed differential between the rotation speed of the steering wheel & his hand motions.

shuffle steering is taught because the instructor has run out of ideas.....

I shuffle my hands when I'm parking the car

if I need more than half a turn on the steering wheel, I use the throttle, in extremis one can get three quarters of a turn when crossed up

even if I am demonstrating the evils of hanging on too long to counter steer, I dont need more wheel than I can use without shuffling (a turn and a half, from 3/4 one way to 3/4 the other), I can usually manage to completely spin the car, either way, without shuffling when doing this

make it easy on yourself, if you need to shuffle the wheel, get a necker's *** (I feel a song coming on)

Final clincher, I think the British teach shuffling.

PS did they have **** in Talledega Nights? If not they missed a rich vein of innuendo

Are you saying that for a hairpin or tight decreasing radius turn it's faster for someone in a low HP car to be backing off the throttle and play pitch and catch to rotate the car rather than put more than a half turn of steering in?

I find it hard to believe that Hurley Haywood teaches shuffle steering because he's "run out of ideas"

Funny, I park hand over hand.

That's because they built cars with steering wheels as big as hula hoops.

Nigel Mansell was driving in a race one time and he had 'shuffled' the wheel, unfortunately he forgot how many times and didnt unwind enoug, as a result he drove his race car straight into a bridge, whilst being broadcast live nationally......

Robin, now that you had me thinking about it, I paid more attention when I went to to visit a job today. I found that I do a combination. When I have to turn the wheel less then 45°, I tend to keep both hands at 3 & 9. When I go farther, but not more than 120°, I shuffle and keep one hand firmly at either 3 or 9. Over 120°, I go hand over hand. So now when I have my Denali out on the track, you know exactly what I'll be doing!

Larry

I was getting a bit worried there for a moment - also wearing your steel toed race boots, shorts and tool belt, doubtless.
