I drive my '81SC to the track. If I don't have someone to bring my extra tires I'll either drive there on them or put them on a roofrack. I do get some funny looks as I unload a ton of stuff. I fit inside my car:
jack
4 jackstands
tools - 2 bags
electric impact wrench
fluids
cooler & food
personal safety equip
2 bags of misc - tape, pyrometer, tiewraps, etc.
extra sets of brake pads
brake bleeder bottle
clothes for a couple days
tires on the roof
I've gone as far as Laguna Seca. No a/c in the summer up the 5 sucks. In the end it wasn't so bad that I won't do it again.

Jack...I LOVE your car ...can we see some pics of the wing struts?...does the front splitter effectively balance out the down force of the wing? (sorry about the mini hi-jacking)

Burning Brakes
I drive mine to the track as well. Longest run was from NorCal down to Orange County (8+ in traffic) and then back through Willow Springs. I do have the luxury of AC and Cruise control though. I typically go to Thunderhill which is about 2.5 hours.
It's loud (no cat, no sound deadening, no sunroof), very stiff (JIC/Monoballs) but there is a great feeling after a long track weekend of burning hydrocarbons to drive home in the Hippo.
