Default Trailer Security

Hello All,
After reading the post last month about the stolen trailers, I'm interested to learn what everyone is doing for trailer security.

I am really considering a GPS unit to monitor activity. I think they are about $450 and maybe $10/month for monitoring

I have a tongue lock, but also a breakaway system that locks the brakes when the key is removed. Frankly, I thought that was sufficient until today when I went to the storage lot where I keep it, and the trailer had been moved about 20'. So, seems the breakaway system does not lock the brakes as I had thought.

Jeff,
Do you have a good source for information on GPS units?
Thanks,
Jim

Jeff,

I know you've heard my Trailex open stolen story and how my new WellsCargo has been broken into (4) times now ... I think GPS is the only way to go!

I have locks on every wheel now and the hitch, plus rigging on the inside to limit access to only one of three doors AND it's now stored in a members only access lot monitored 24/7. I still visit it weekly.

My neighbor had one of his 20' trailers stolen this winter here in Lakeview from a Catholic church parking lot that he uses. It was completely blocked in on the sides and the front by his dually pickup truck. The crew disconnected the transmission of the truck from underneath and pushed the truck aside, then hooked up the trailer and drove off. Unbelievable right??!! GPS would at least aid in recovery.

I just got theft insurance on my trailer for $12 a year through my auto policy. Having had a couple of cars stolen I've come to realize if a professional wants it they're going to get it.

Jim, I am looking into it now. I have talked to one company to try to get an idea of what you need and how they work. It really seems to be the way to go. You pay for the number of access you want per month. I think the base package at $10 will notify you if the trailer has crossed a "geofence" that you set. I would set mine to be any movement or at least the gate at the storage facility. For the time and $$ we have wrapped up into getting them set up just right, I don't know that the monetary compensation from an insurance company is enough. I also store my car in mine, so I have a bit more at stake.

I'll post more information when I have it. I'm leaning toward a GPS unit tied into a 12v battery and maybe a solar charger to keep everything working. I can't believe a GPS unit would draw much power but you never know. For $500 or so, I think it is worth it.

Victor, I WISH!

How about a lighted panel on the back which says "HELP, I'VE BEEN STOLEN, CALL 911" when lit, but is blank when off so the thief doesn't know it's there. Set it so it lights up after a couple minutes of driving, unless you've switched the hidden disable button.

Thanks Jeff. Insurance is fine but like Jeff, I've got a lot of time and money in setup. And besides, I'd love the catch the SOB that stole it!
