Our race shop bought an ionizer bag, intended for hockey gear (you don't know bad smell til you'be carted around an suv of teenage hockey players and their gear bags)

We put all the helmets in, plug it in overnight. amazing.

One of the helmet companies is now making something similar.

+1 for this - I use this for my football gear and it works wonders. eBay has tons for sale.

Most ionizers create ozone, which causes premature deterioration of rubber and plastics.

I tried Greg's method and found that it works very well. I use laundry detergent and squeeze it into the padding to get it all nice and clean. Thorough rinsing is needed. I let it drip dry until most of the excess water is out and then place it on a couple of thick towels that I have encircled over a heat/AC register.

I sent my helmet back to Bell, and they re-lined it for $100.00 After that, I went theSparco balaklava route. The seam at the front is very uncomfortable. I have a built in Chatterbox, so the saturation method is out. I just bought an "underarmor" liner, but haven't used it yet. It looks like it will absorb quite a bit.

I use a Simpson "Helmet Dry". Works like a charm, I also spray Febreeze once in a while.

What they are probably using is the product developed by Minnesota PCA racers Rick Polk and Steve Washburn. Rick ownes a design company and Steve owns Shock Doctor. They developed the hockey bags first but also have prototypes of a race suit bag and a helmet bag. I think they'll be on the market this spring. I've used the prototypes and they work great.
