Post What car to buy.

I currently have a 964 Turbo that I don't really want to take the abuse of DE. After attending a car control clinic I'm really excited to get into DE. I am going to buy a new porsche that I can use for DE for a few years and then maybe turn into a track only car. I am going to need to car for transportation(Low miles) for awhile (1-2 years).

Right now my budget is only about 6k-8k. I have never driven on the track before and would be considered a totaly newbie. I was thinking about getting a 944 Turbo but was wondering if this will be to much car for me for awhile? Would a 944 NA be just as good as I learn to drive? I could afford a nice 944 NA right now or I could wait a little longer and maybe pick up a nice 944 Turbo in the winter. Any suggestions?

Pick up a nice 944NA right now and get driving! The NA is easier to learn as you do not have to deal with turbo boost etc, plus being relatively low power you will become a better driver learning to maximize in the turns as the strights are going to be a challenge.

Beware! Its VERY addictive and not cheap.
The slipery slope has begun!
Good luck and have fun!

Ok. Do you think I will wish I had more power really soon? I am use to driving my 964 Turbo (380hp) but not on the track.

It would probably be cheaper to wait 6 months and get a 944 Turbo then to get a 944 NA now and sell it later.

On the other hand I probably will just need a few years to learn how to drive on the track?

Ian964,

I would wait and get the 944 turbo. The turbo isn't that much harder to learn on since the turbo pretty much stays on boost on the track and you really don't have to fight lag. The stock turbo has enough horsepower to be fun but not enough to get you into trouble like your 930, and it also has a stiffer stock suspension and nice 4-piston brakes. Once you start to get the hang of things the horsepower bug will start to hit you and its pretty easy to start modifing the turbo to get some big horsepower for reasonable costs.

My advice is to get a decent '87 or '88 non S turbo. The '86 was the first model year and has a bunch of parts that were upgraded on the '87 and up. It also has a funky wheel offeset which makes it harder to find wheels for. Since you will be using this primarily as a track car, it's really not worth spending the extra cash on the S, since over the course of time you will be replacing/upgrading most of the S components anyway - shocks, springs, turbo, etc.

I think with the 944NA you would be wishing for more power in a hurry. The NAs are nice since it would probably force you to hone you skills more since it is definitly a momentum car, but it's nice to have the turbo platform that you can fairly easily upgrade power into the 350 hp range.

BTW you should keep an eye on the 944 turbo forum since decent cars come up for sale in your spending range from time to time.

As DJF1 states its very addictive so be prepared. Good luck

What about the 968, would that be as competitive as a 944 Turbo?

A stock 968 would hang with a stock 951 but not with a modified one. The problem with any NA car is that it tough to get any big power gains. The turbo cars OTOH can get big hp gains with minimal mods. Just a chip will take a non-S to aroung 270 hp. Plus the 968 will cost you quite a bit more to buy.. I would love a 968 for a street car but for the track I would stick with the 951. Now a 968 with a turbo conversion on the other hand...... <img border="0" title="" alt="[Wink]" src="wink.gif" />
