Post harness questions...

current setup is a harness bar with bolt in 5-pt harnesses (only using 4)...

Question: If I buy a redline rollbar, I then would need new harnesses correct? Or can you modify the existing setup to work when using the harness wrap method? Id rather not lose the nice camlock features as I know these are expensive new...If I have to re-buy who has the best prices on a basic 4-pt setup to work with a rollbar? thanks all!

If your going to the next level of a roll bar/cage, I would definately use a sub-belt system. They cant cost that much more. I think some belt systems can have a sub-belt added easily.

Just my opinion.

You can wrap the ends around the rollbar, using one of the flat slotted metal parts. See the PCA Club Racing rules, appendix B, for how to thread the harness through the slotted metal pieces.

My two cents, I agree with Chris that you really ought to use the sub belt. The 4 point system, without sub-belt, will position you in the seat, until, god forbid, you have an accident. And I won't get going here about using harnesses with stock Porsche seats (a BAD idea - our PCA region doesn't allow that; seats must be designed to support harnesses). So, if you're going to use Porsche seats, at least run the sub belt in front of the seat - not optimal, but better than nothing. Best answer: if you're driving is getting to the point where a rollbar and harness is a necessity, get the right seats. They'll be cloth, bolstered, and support the harness.

I would also chime in here to say if you don't use a sub belt, don't use the harness.

SamGrant:
Not using your sub-belt can really make your whole harness setup quite ineffective.

In our region (NNJR PCA) you can use either a stock 3-point seat belt, or a 5 or 6 point belt. Instructors will not drive with you if you have only a 4-point system. As a track tech co-chair, I cannot emphasize enough the importance of a 5 or 6 point system vs. a 4-point.

Whatever you do, get that sub-belt installed ASAP!

sounds great! thanks for the excellent input. sub belt will be installed prior to anything other than auto-x. also, looking at the pic, how does one install the subbelt? should I buy a metal end and then arrange it like the other 4 lines? TIA!

Sam:
You can attach a bolt end either:
1. Through your floor (just make sure you have a backing plate between the floorboard and the bolt)
2. Underneath one of your seat rails.

While option #1 is the preferred method (and the only PCA Club racing approved method), option #2 requires no drilling of the floor. At first, you may notice the sub-belt rubbing your leg a little, but over time, it is hardly noticable.

I have a six point harness setup, and as such, my sub-belt is attached underneath BOTH seat rails, forming a triangle (floor is the base, the sub-belt sides are the sides, and the apex is where the sub-belt links into the locking mechanism). I got the six point for the symetrical look & feel.

Z-man -
Depending on the harness that you have, you might try criss-crossing the sub-belt straps between the buckle and the bolt ends. If you have a harness where the two sub straps meet side by side at the buckle (my Sparco is like this) then this will reduce the contact that the straps make with your thighs. What I mean is have the left side strap go the right side seat bolt and the right side strap go the left seat bolt so that the straps cross each other just in front of the seat edge.
