PAG's racing budget back when they were racing for overall wins...
Does anyone know what the factory used to spend when they were winning Le Mans (sigh)?
In other words what did the GT-1 program cost?
Or has anyone seen a number for the cost of the Audi R-8 program?
TIA
Mike

Don't have those numbers right now but will get them.
Rumor has it Audi is pulling out after 2002 and turning it over to Bentley, and that Porsche will return in the LMP class with 2 cars for 2003. That would be great if in fact they do it.
The GT class will still be fun but going for it all is where it's really exciting.

Thanks Bill, I'd appreciate it.
That's interesting about the Audi program and Bentley.
I always figured when Piech left so would the R-8 program.
Have you ever heard if any of the R-8 development was done at Weissach (the Piech connection again)? After all, PAG had a new design that was testing well, and when PAG pulled the plug on it, Audi suddenly had a front runner.

(btw, been enjoying your reports on the Le Mans effort. Thanks)

Mike, I've heard unconfirmed rumors that the GT1-98 program cost approximately $50 million (USD) in 1998. If that figure is correct, it must include all R&D for the cars plus all costs associated with competing at Le Mans, in the FIA GT series, and at Petit Le Mans.

Mike, one more thing worth mentioning...
WW is on record as saying money has *not* been the issue regarding Porsche's refusal to field a werks prototype. The sponsorship dollars (i.e. Warsteiner or another corporate sponsor) are available for the taking. The engineering expertise, on the other hand, has been diverted to the truck program. <img src="confused.gif" border="0">
