Harness with out Roll Cage?
Let me state that this is all for future reference. I plan to get a car for moderate auto crossing to be my daily driver as well.
If I were to get a racing seat (ie: sparco, momo, etc.) I would need the proper harness (ie: 4 or 5 pt.) but with out a roll cage is it acceptable to bolt the harness to the rear seat or somewhere about that area? Are harnesses street legal? In Florida will the strong arm of the law reach out and give me a nice ticket?
Thank you for your time to assist a poor college boy who needs to sell his '93 Mazda MX-6 LS so he can join the prestigous ranks of Porsche racers in a 951.

Try the Brey- Krauss harness truss. I believe its $450-500. It's a nice in between way to go. Keeps harness in proper location. Mounts using existing seat belt bolt. easy installation and you can use the original seat belt for daily drive. Would not recommend for serious racing but D.E. ok. Saw a picture of a BMW that rolled at a DE Top crushed to the top of the door sills. Everybody OK because the OEM belts let them slide down in seat. If using this system with 5 points they would have had nowhere to go. Crush!!! Installed roll cage after that but still have belts mounted to it. PCA Racer. the mount even acts as a strut bar inside the car, adds a little stiffness. I think it would be good for your application though. Belt must thread through seat at horizontal position so a bar is a must but actual mount of belt to rear is possible as long as this horizontal position is maintained.

Want to clarify previous post. daily driver use stock belt incase of previous mentioned rollover accident. Stock belt probably won't work with racing seats though. An autocross setup like this would be ok .High speed rollover risk minimal. A DE 1 or 2 times might be ok as being an instructor I would slap your wrist pretty hard if you got aggressive and in over your head. I am concerned when getting in a car with 5 pts. and just a harness bar for obvious reasons. YOU MUST WEIGH THE RISK VS. MONEY VS. A DAILY DRIVER OPTION. I made it this far though Knock on wood .Keep it shiny side up!!!

Listen to JDW as he's an instructor and knows what he is talking about. This is the link if you want to check it out.. http://forums.rennlist.com/scripts/r...&f=15&t=001188
Also you could get a full Autopower Bolt in or U-weld cage for about $550, or if this is too wild for a daily driver you could just get an autopower rollbar for about $260.

I just thought you may like to look at this nice bolt in roll bar. It is the only one I have every seen to use the stock seat belt mounting points for maximum strength.

If you're going to mount harness's with your new seat, at a minimum you need a harness bar to route the belts out of the back of the seat to their end points. Do not mount the harness to the harness guide bar. Generally accepted (SCCA, PCA) guidelines say the harness should not exit your shoulders at any lower than 40 degrees from horizontal. This is to prevent spinal compression injuries in the event of an accident. Suggest 5 or 6 point belts, to keep the lap belt from riding up.

Wow thanks for the link Tabor. Do you or anyone else know how it bolts in the car? It looks like it bolts in just like a harness bar, so no holes in the carpet and floor like an autopower rollbar. That is really neat.

Dougherty in PA has a series of bolt-in rollbars. Their DAS rollbars show a listing on their web site for 944's, but when you click on it, nothing happens. So you might want to call them. Their web site is www.das-sport.com.

I have the Redline Rennsport bolt-in bar and love it. It mounts at the two outboard lapbelt points in the rear (that's 2) and the C-pillar bolt holes, usually plugged with plastic screw on early cars or used as shoulder belt guide mounts on later cars (that's 2 more). So, total of four bolts, some washers to get the spacing just right and you're done. I can install the bar alone in about 15 minuts and remove it in about 10 minutes. There are about 5+ guys here in the Chicago area who use them.
The other cool part is that I can 'de-track' the car (belts, extinguisher, rollbar, video mount) re-install the rear 3-points, drop the floor mats back in... all in about 30 minutes. Throw in a quick wash to remove all insects which were imbedded into the paint at 120mph and remove all the brake dust... The car is civilian in less than an hour and a half.
Keep the shiny side up...

Dave, I've decided to get one of these for my car (current, and future!), can you tell me how you ordered it, how long it took for delivery, etc.? Does it come painted? If so is it available in black? Any other details you want to give out?
Thanks,
Ahmet

Sure, just contact John Hajny at Redline Rennsport (REDL944@aol.com). Ours took a while (3 of us bought the same time) 'cause John was going to Sebring (I think). Anyway, I think the standard lead time is about 3 weeks or so.
Colors seem to be open, mine is black to match the black and linen interior. Others have red in red cars. They're not cheap, but I thought it was a better investment than a harness bar (added rollover protection, a little added structural rigidity).
They're big and shipped air (like $75 a piece if I remember). We picked 'em up at the airport and installed 'em wherever we could hook up.
I leave the extinguisher mounted on mine, shoulder harnesses wrapped around the bar, and hang it up in the garage on a couple of bicycle hooks.
Note that you can't have anyone sit in the back with the bar in. I pull mine out before putting the kids back there.
Good luck and tell John that the boys from Chicago say hi.
Keep the shiny side up.
PS. Can someone at least rate me on this web board? I'm beginning to feel un-loved.
