I ran at the original Gateway. When I say I ran, I mean they had a open day for street ONLY cars at nominal speeds to bed in the track before any racing ever took place. I took out my trusty '8x Monte Carlo SS (also doubled as my tow vehicle) and had a ball. Moved from St. Louis a month later so no on the track in a race car...

Got to admit the oval walls scare me a little. The new Iowa Speedway in Newton will be holding some races on a short 1.1 mile road course but they won't use the banking of the oval, just the apron...

Speaking of drag strips (yes I went to Lion's in my misspent youth)... anybody remember the San Fernando Drag strip? I would peel the hubcaps off my mother's Buick Roadmaster and take that bad boy down the strip. I saw a dragster hit the unheard of speed of 148 mph!!!! I once took my dad's bugeye sprite to San Fernando, and got matched up against a 36 HP VW bug. There was a race that took friggen forever. Yes, I lost.

Ontario was an amazing and still fairly new facility when it was torn down. The full course was 19 turns and part of the banked oval... kinda like Calif Speedway. But 19 turns... I honestly used to get lost out there, and would forget which section I was on.

George,
I confess to not knowing the historical significance. I always assumed that the Lion's club built the strip as a way to keep us young punks from racing on the streets. Which... achemmm... we of course never did.

Oregon will get a race track far away from noise complaints.
