Post 911 Stub axle failure?

So I'm checking out a noise I heard whilst rolling the car out of the garage... Notice drivers rear wheel is loose.

Turns out the stub axle sheared off, castelated nut with it. Probably some time at Road America. *gasp* Good thing I didn't finish the weekend because of mechanicals elsewhere.

Anyone ever seen this happen? Stress? Overtorqued nut? Age?

Should I be magnafluxing these every year?
