Yes, within a 1 sec of pole for Indy F1. One day of track time.

Yeah, Mark paid, too. Thing is, he kept whining about being "down on power" and what-not. He figured he had to drive the low line, to drive fewer feet, because he didn't have the power of some of the other cars. I told him to just drive the damned car, pray for a lot of late yellows since he is VERY good on restarts, and let the chips fall where they may.
DMD aka Tit.s boy, look at the spread of qualifying times in any modern F1 race. It is a lot greater than 1 second.

After all, technically he's Italian....
As I recall, after 1 day, Marco (much as I like him) was 2.x seconds off the pace...

Marco may be young, but he has alot more experience in an open wheel car than Gordon did when he did his day at Indy with JPM.
(I'm not a Gordon fan by the way)
Bottom line, NASCAR is more than just being able to turn left. No PSM, or electronic aids, no telemetry, no ABS, just a simple 2 way radio back to the pits to tell the crew what is going on.
So imagine you have an ill-handling car, and you're in a mix of 43 cars, sometimes 3 wide, trying to hold on at 185-190mph. There are NO adjustments that you can make from the cockpit except for your own driving style, and the modulation of the 3 pedals you have to work with.
Its just a lot harder than people think. When the car is handling great, sure it's probably alot easier.
I'm not saying the drivers in one series are any better than another. I'm just saying NASCAR is harder than it looks.
I think the only reason JPM didn't do better today is due to pit stops. Something tells me he's not use to pulling into the pits with 42 other drivers at the same time, or at least he hasn't done it in a while. Seems like every time they pitted he lost several positions.
He still did great though with a 19th place finish!!!

VR, did Martin give any samples from his prior ride? I only got a case of Diet Coke from Truex.
Boston 1 sec with no prior time, no pit crew interaction with the car, which they used to provide. No other traffic or rubber being laid down..... In Montoya's car........

Dem boys can drive! I've driven Daytona and it is steep, bumpy, narrow and intimidating. More than once the camera showed a driver at 180 mph dialing in a handful of opposite lock to keep his beast going straight. My car, which probably handles much better than a Nextel car, was interesting at 150 there. I can only imagine what 180 would be like.

Brian, I was in your camp about Gordon until I met him in Kahalui airport (Maui). Jetlag and all he spent 1/2 hour plus with young fans, signing autographs, taking picts. No Admiral lounge, no entourage to stop people approaching him. It was just before his divorce too. Really expressed his gratitude to his fans.
