Do not use a standard phone extension. You can make your own with tools from radio shack.

Isn't it just a phone line wire? Any place has different lengths.

You can make your own (but why buy the tools for a one time job?) or just coil up the extra like I did in a place out of the way with a zip tie. Mine follows my roll cage, so there isn't a tremendous amount left over any way.

Patrick, what's the difference? My hotlap-supplied wire broke it's plastic hold-in tab, and I tried substituting a length of phone wire. It didn't work. But I didn't do any investigating as to why that was the case.

Why is it?

Default Transmitting of lap times

How about systems that transmit laptimes back to the pits so that data can be collected by the crew? Timing an 8, 12 hour (or 24 hour) endurance race becomes painful pretty quick. We've always had timers available in the past but it sure is a boring job. Thanks!

When your a crew of one who wrenches it, transports it and drives it, there is nobody to time it (and that includes the wife who won't even go to the track) and to have a wireless system that records lap times would cost a small fortune I suspect. Besides, I like instant gratification by looking at the timer when feasible and not having to wait until I pit.

If you put the two ends of the wire next to each other, in the same orientation, you will notice that the phone cord wires are swapped end for end, whereas the Hot Lap cable has the wires in the same order at each end. You could just buy a standard phone cord, and lop one end off, and put a new one on the other way.

I have a Longacre HotLap in-car timing system as well but I'd also like a timing system for the pits...the HotLap system can't keep the historical data for N hours.

NOTE: It's also hard to see your lap times on a HotLap system anyway in the pitch black of night during an enduro. The model I have is certainly not backlit. My fastest night times at the Thunderhill 12 Hour were only 1 second off my fastest day time...at the end of my second 2 hour stint my times were still dropping. Have to love that!
