Actually the hot tire was the Semperit M401, but the rich guys ran the Michelin XWXs.

The Phoenix Stahlflex 3011 is the great autocross tire I remember- had some on my Elan, but then bought some close-out Goodyear slicks for $20 from a classified ad in the back of Autoweek, and boy, did those grip!

We used to train in those old Caprice Classics as well as Suburbans, Sedan DUH Villes, Town Cars, and Crown Vics/Grand Marquis. They will do surprisingly agile things, providing they were equipped with the HD suspension & big rear sway bar (like the one in the photo).

It was amazing- at the SCCA divisional (many many many years ago) I finished 3rd out of 18 in F/Stock, beating 15 Mustang GTs, Z-28s, and Trans-Ams.
It had a bench front seat, and at a few events I took 5 helmeted passengers with me!

Cool beans. IIRC, the law enforcement package Impalas/Caprices we used (circa 1983-1985, before they changed to the whale body style) held a whopping 205hp 350 V8. The P71 package Crown Vics back then had 200, now they have 240, IIRC. The limos we used had special motors in them that were detuned NASCAR engines, but then again they had to haul around 10,000 pounds of armor and still be able to lay rubber.
