Now Z-man, given that you studied the suspension question for 4 years!!!! Are you planning on the fact that models of trucks will come and go during the time you will likely study and analyze this question??????

I will be getting my year-end bonus at the end of February (gotta love them accountants!) so this ordeal should be over in a short month or so...

I just stole a Dodge Ram 2500 Mega cab turbo diesel for $12,000 under sticker. I am averaging 18 mpg with 500 miles on the truck. My towing capacity is 12,500 lbs. The rear seat in the truck has 12 inches more leg room than a Maybach and it reclines AND fold flat. The new Yukons cannot give you a completely flat floor because of the 3rd row stadium seating platform.
Another club member picked up the hemi quad cab 2500 for under $30,000.
The deals are out there with Dodge.

Three Wheelin'
Veloce Raptor,
What was that thing? A C130 would be good if you could land at the track. But I think a Chinook would be the best. I remember going to Camp Pickett in Virginia in the 80's and a National Guard Unit from somewhere carried their personal cars to summer camp in Chinooks. The problem was there is a thing in Chinooks that keeps the blades from meshing, or actually clattering with each other, and whatever that was, quit working, and it kinda tore up the helicopter, luckily they were on the ground not flying, so nobody got hurt. The guy whose car was inside wanted the Army to pay for the damage, so the Guard made them quit carrying their cars inside.
I always thought that would be a neat way to go to races, if you were a Zillionaire. I don't know how much fuel a Chinook burns, but I remember a Huey burned about 80 gallons an hour. Multiply that times $3.00 a gallon, and remember a Chinook engine is about 2.5 times bigger, and there are two of them. But, I would still need to carry a pickup truck, because the Army cured me of sleeping in anything but a motel room.

My neighbor just bought a Tacoma but it's too light duty for car towing, I think. Between the middle of the range ratings (235 hp, 260 trq) and a tow capacity of 6500 I think you're too near the safety margin.
It's a really nice truck though and worth every penny.

Besides, I don't have to explain MY truck using the word "cummins"....
An additional bonus: traffic absolutely clears a path when they see me behind them. Must be something about a dark, tinted-out Suburban-type of vehicle...
Bill, that is a C5A (if I recall correctly), transporting the core vehicles of the Presidential motorcade.

Z - do you typically keep a car until it hits 190k? Neither the Sport Trak or Dakota have a reputation for lasting forever. The Toyota's on the other hand are pretty bullet proof. Test drive them, and I thing you'll find the Toyota's fit and finish is noticeable better than the Dodge or Ford. Also, don't forget about the brakes - the Toyota comes with 4 wheel discs and the fronts have 4 piston calipers while the Dakota has front discs and rear drums. I towed a steel open trailer with a V8 4Runner Sport this past year and have been happy with it. I'm sure it's not as good as a full size SUV or Pickup but I was in the same boat as you and wasn't really in the position to get a full size truck for my daily driver.

One important factor when towing which is commonly overlooked is wheelbase. The longer the wheelbase the better ride you'll have while towing - a longbed truck gets a higher towing capacity than a shortbed. You could get the job done with something smaller like an SUV (excursions and burbans don't count), but why risk your race car?
Go with something like a F150 supercrew or Chevy 1500HD 4door. I love driving my Superduty everyday, but then again I'm from Texas where our blood is more red than everybody elses
