Any opinions on the Diasio D962?
I've been looking around for a track/DE car for awhile and was curious if anyone has any insights on the Diasio D962.
From a bit of reading, it sounds like an interesting possibility especially given that they are located about 25 miles from my home.
I understand that they can be raced in SCCA D Sports class and would likely be 'welcomed' in DE events by PCA, BMW CCA or Tracktime.
Anyone actually driven one of these?
Also, any suggestions for a car in the +/- $35000 range?

Rick,
I am not a big fan of these for various reasons. I have heard they are not very competitive in their SCCA class for one. Second is I am not sure how safe they are. Maybe they are fine but I would certainly check out any crash data if it is available. I wouldn't want to be the guineau pig.
IMO a 944 Turbo S is the best bang for the buck. Probably less than $20K for a nice car. I know of one in the Columbus area if you are interested, new motor, tranny. Also has a trailex trailer. Email me off line if you want his info.

To Greg's point on crash safety, they are a very small car. They have the 962's proportions down, but it's small.
I haven't driven one, but was suprized by the size. The pictures make it look bigger.

I haven't driven one, but I pit next to one last year at an SCCA regional. I've never been terribly impressed with the SCCA sports cars that are powered by motorcycle engines and this one is no exception.
If you want a purebred race car that's probably more interesting, more competitive, and better engineered, try the new CSR Radical. It ran very well at the runoffs last year and looks like a nice package.
If you are looking at it just because it looks like a 962, it's anything but. If you would like something Porsche related, I'm sure you could find some other interesting Porsche based race cars.

I don't see these at PCA DE's, as they aren't Porsche's, and that's usually, but not always, a requirement. I have run with them the past two years at a local Alfa club DE, and they run pretty consistent sub minute laps at Lime Rock.

This was one of the cars I considered. I was looking for a 2 seater, pure race car, that I could use at open track events, as well as some endurance racing and occasional SCCA.
The Diasio is pretty fast, but is not competitive in SCCA DSR. It appears that it would take $15k-$20k to make it competitive. I didn't especially like the pretend 962 approach.
I opted for the Radical SR3. More $ up front, but a better race car and you also get the 2 seats.
The Diasio appears to be a very safe race car with the amount of cage. Also, note that NASA has started a 962 series in your part of the country, so there is a venue to race these without the upgrade to be competitive in SCCA. The Diasio is likely to be cheaper/easier to maintain, as it is lower tech than the Radical.

Mark,
Where did you get your Radical? Where in the US (I'm presuming you're in the US) were you able to look at one prior to purchase? Anything you're willing to share on price, maintenance, mod costs, etc.. would be really appreciated - email me privately if you wish.
I've been looking through their web site but haven't been able to find anyplace in the US to look at them. I'm giving some thought to going to a couple of the SCCA races to look at cars this year.
Thanks much.

Rick,
You should go back and talk to Bill at Performance Alignment in Cinncinati. We talked about SCCA racing quite a lot during by day he cornerbalanced and aligned my car at his shop. He has an incredible amount of expereince in many type of cars and racing. His comment on the Diaso is that for the money you can get a much better car. He was not a big fan. He had lots of suggestions that he claimed were more economical and much more competitive than the Diaso.

I purchased through the local dealer - Sunstate in CA. In the case of the SR3, there are none to look at - they are only delivering the first customer cars now. I was able to see the other model at SCCA races. There are plenty running in SCCA, so you should not have any problem getting to see Radicals. In my case, I already race in SpecRacer Ford and will keep doing so. The Radical (and the look at the Diasio) were for DE/enduro/etc and I wanted a 2 seater.
As far as other classes, you can contact a friend of mine in the Ft. Wayne area - Phil Keirn 260.244.3751. Phil maintains and does rentals of Spec Racer Fords and Formula Mazdas.
