Poll: Best driver in Porsche History
I watched The History Channel's "Ultimate Auto", and it featured the Silver Arrows of the pre-WW2 era. What magnificent cars. Made me wonder, who is the best race car driver for Porsche? What about of all time?

Wasn't the #14 Lowenbrau 962 the winnest Porsche of all time.

A couple names have not yet been mentioned.
Jacky Ickx won Le Mans on four separate occasions for Porsche and had three 2nd place finishes as well. He also won the FIA World Endurance Championship in '82 and '83 in a 956.
Hurley Haywood won the "big-three" endurance races a combined ten times (Le Mans x 3, Daytona x 5, Sebring x 2). Every one of these wins was at the wheel of a Porsche.
Ickx, Haywood, Bell, and Holbert defined Porsche's racing success. You can pick one "best Porsche racer" if you want, but you'd be splitting hairs.
The best overall sportscar racer ever? Jacky Ickx. No question. His successes go far beyond Porsche.

We should also add Brian Redman and Vic Elford to the list. They have some great accomplishments in making the 917 a success.
Dan Gurney, best Porsche F1 driver.
Teo Fabi, best Porsche CART driver.
George Follmer won 6 Can-Ams to Mark Donohue's 7, Donohue just won most of his in the same season! They each have 1 Can-Am championship.
Jochen Mass is second to Jackie Ickx in Sports Car W C wins, poles and fastest laps. Jackie gets my vote for best, everyone mentioned is great.

No slight to Follmer, but his wins in the '72 season occured when Donohue was out with a badly broken leg. George was also driving the car that Donohue developed. Also remember that shortly before his death Donohue took the same Can Am car (917/30) in CAM2 livery and produced a closed circuit speed record that held until 1990! Mark's total domination of the first year of the IROC series also speaks highly of his driving credit. Although I'm a big Donohue fan, as far as Porsche results go.. Derek Bell wins. Bob Wolleck, Hurley Haywood, Al Holbert, Brian Redman, all made monumental contributions. As did Peter Gregg... surprised he hasn't been mentioned either. I guess his victories were more US focused. How about the Porsche racing stars of the future.... David Donohue? Mike Fitzgerald? Randy Pobst?
