Post Rothman's Turbo Cup

I bought a US Carrera Cup a few years ago to race and have fun with, I was lucky enough to by a pristine example for a wonderful, lower than market price. The car was almost too concours to race, but I bought it for that purpose.

I wanted the Rennlister's view on the Rothman Turbo 944 Cups. Do you think these will ever be rare enough to demand top price in the years ahead? For a thread, what fun Porsche cars do you feel might.

I had my eye on a true 1974 3.0ltr RS. But missed it.

Oh well, I'll be interested to hear your comments?

Well,
Possibly...
Just remember that any race car will be worth more with a notable competition history..

Even then you are talking a risk... Sure it will be very cool to a 944 guy, but to anyone else??

Might never be worth much... Then again??

Hope I can help here. I know these Cup Cars quite well. I was involved in the series when living in Toronto.

A " FEW " of the cars have some strong value. Cars driven by Richard Spenard, Scott Goodyear, are the best cars to have. Bill Adam, and Luwig Heimraths cars were fast too.

Important to know also is who set up and took care of car. And how many if any crashes.

The cars were fast, easy to drive . I really enjoyed them !!

Thanks, I guess the other question is what the market value of one really is....

I have noticed the 993 Supercups and the GT3 Cups come down in price. I see alot of them for sale at prices that are "dreamers" at best.

Problem with the Rothman cars is there isn't alot of knowledge about them and not enough of them have been for sale to get a true market value.

Some people have said that this car wouldn't be a good car to have since it wasn't a 911. I suppose that was because the 911 market is larger.

Assuming that 90-93 Race Cups are selling for sub 60s, then the Rothman turbo should be in the low 40s upper 30s?????

Thanks Pete, I made an offer on a car last night, if I get it, I'll be in touch. It sounds like you could be a wealth of information.

Hey Jim...

Are you getting rid of the cupcar or are you adding to a collection?

If you want a 944 chassis with a winning race history you could always buy the silver 3L.

I'm not getting rid of the cup car. That is a fantastic car. I'm just looking at other rare Factory built race cars that might be fun to race and relaible

Well I guess factory built and reliable disqualify the silver beast. Though reliability seems to have improved since the rebuild, there is no comparison to a factory built car.

Hope the deal works out for you. Perhaps you will be running something different at Sebring.?

Pete:

It looks like I'm going to be buying this car. I would like to talk to you about yours sometime as well as the information you have.

Thanks everyone for all the help. This is what is so great about being a Porsche owner, having friends you don't even know you have!

I wanted to say thank you for all the help. I am now the proud owner of a rare Rothmans Turbo Cup 944.

I have had a 930, a 934, GT2 single turbo (ex Champion Porsche 72 car)and now a 964 Cup. For any of you that haven't had the opportunity to drive a Porsche factory race car, there really is a difference.

Happy Holidays,

Jim Newman

Jim,
Thanks, I love it too.
Do you have pics of yours (Both of the Cups)? I have seen, been around quite a few of the European Cup cars, 944 and 964.
As said before the 944 Turbo Cup is a best kept secret, in terms of value on the track, historically, and for the money.
I have considered quite a few options but nothing has the same performanec/reliability/performance ratio today.
Regards, George
PS Merry Christmas to all
